Is that black grass in the left hand corner of your first pic😯
Could be. The photo was taken from a headland tramline in a bad BG area of that field. Just shows you how BG control is helped by crop competition.
The saying, “Never does the month of May go by without an ear of wheat on the farm” very nearly didn’t happen and I had to look hard to find any this year. I wonder if those ears were there because it is right beside the tramline and got more light.

This is the closest I could find yesterday. Mid September sown Grafton, Scottish Borders.

Extase just starting to break out into ear here too (West Midlands)

Is it good if wheat heads in May? Why is it important?
No, it’s not important other than in the south of the country, some ears are usually out by the end on May which might give an indication as to when harvest is likely to start. I have known some years when all the ears are well out by the end of May. But I’ve never known one where absolutely none are visible at the end on May here yet. This year was close though!

There seems to be theme here. Been at grass since Sat, thought no issue until now. Good bit of grafton ear poking out. Toying with chancing leaving a couple of days to catch a decent bit of ear and close the gate. Risky? 1l adexar with multisite applied 23 days ago. Sdhi + prothio on hand.
