Early Nitrogen for tillering

I don’t disagree but this year more than any other I want nutrition on the floor as soon as the crop starts to grow. So many times I’ve heard others preach that I go to early and then miss the opportunity when it does arrive themselves! Biomass is essential this year.
You’re early N a couple of years ago paid of massively when we missed the boat. I will be going soon too I think.

going early is more likely to be worth it on winter barley, than winter wheat.

Yes, one of the reasons why WB did quite well here in 2019 was because of the very large amount of applied N left over from, and not used by, the previous crop in 2018.

To replicate this, we should have been applying 50kg N or so in October, but this is strictly forbidden under NVZ.

Now that we've got past the date when applications of N start now actually to be allowed under NVZ, it's now too wet to get it on under cross-compliance.

I’m not in an NVZ now (which might be hanging before long), but can you not apply a low level of N if ‘an agronomic need’ can be shown? If the WB has responded to it, it could be argued that there is an agronomic need?

Apply it to the previous crop.

Late dose of n on your milling wheat. How late is academic.

Drill barley into failed osr which has of course had 30kg of n.

Just thinking aloud.

You can but the advice has to come from a FACTS-qualified adviser.

Well I couldn't wait any longer.

I sprinkled cwt/ac of urea onto some late drilled wheat after beet and then started on the winter barley.

I've done the OSR in the hopes that it will eventually grow faster than the pigeons and pals can eat it. Going to do the wheat I have just drilled on the 31 of Jan (honest , ?) I would probably like to get a bit on the November drilled 2nd wheats but might run out of time.

Its looking like it might be another month before ground will travel...

I'm going away from 28 march until Easter bank holiday, so I predict a week of brisk winds with heat and low humidity, one nice calm ideal spraying day, then back to lively drying weather, allowing all to get drilled up. One calm spraying day while I am landing, then back to utter cack.

Or.... land will just about be fit on the 28thm perfect over the Easter holiday and then drop 2 inches of rain or 8 inches of snow on Easter Monday just as you arrive home..
