Earthworms

Dumped the trailer load of old sheep-muck on a slightly elevated area at the far end of the swamp yesterday morning. Found a surprising number of the little devils all through it this morning while I was making a start on filling the tomato planters.

Really surprised at just how quickly they've moved in but I supposed its like a gourmet feast, set out at an oasis in the middle of a desert. :D(y)

The struggle to turn the swamp into something productive goes on but at least I can get a tractor and trailer in now....................just.

They are ,pst probably not worms that have "moved in", but brandlings (Eisenia fetida) that were already in the muck when you moved it. Have a look at these images, and note the tiger like banding:-

They stink, the name fetida is a hint, and it took me a few years to find out that these easily procured bait worms for fishing were not as tasty smelling to trout as "proper" earthworms.

Definitely earthworms, used to have brandlings on our old place, especially round the midden and slurry pit. The shed we mucked out was a thin layer from handling pens on a concrete floor with not enough 'cover' for worms to make it into the muck only thing we came across were 3 chestnuts, no idea how they got there.

Still the tomato planters are now filled and the worms are busy breaking down the rest of the heap.
