Usually my Spring Malting barley would go for export through Southampton, this year I have some lower N barley than the usual 1.85% stuff and have two similar offers to go to Bairds Witham or Muntons Stowmarket
Not being familiar with either of these homes does anyone with more experience of them have any views to the preferable home out of these two??
It’s a fair haul from West Berks to both of these so would like to avoid any issues before it’s on a wagon !!

I've loaded wagons for both from Dorset and had no major issues. I tend to get more claims at the end of a week, so hate loading on a Thursday afternoon! Friday morning loads struggled to make it there in time unless for a Monday tip.

Muntons can be a pain for claims, it depending on which way the wind is blowing.

If I was you because of the long haul I'd be looking for a nice local easy feed tip, i know its disheartening to have a quality product and not get a premium for it but a redirection charge would soon take the shine off it.

It’s always a difficult decision whether to send to a domestic maltster, onto a boat or feed, but this parcel of Barley would deliver a £5000 margin over feed so I’m prepared for a bit of risk but if it goes on a boat from Southampton or Avonmouth it’s a lesser risk if things go wrong !!
I’d just like to reduce the risk of something avoidable going wrong...

I would sell for feed before sending to Muntons. You’ll end up with feed price anyway.
You'll end up with feed minus the redirection charge.

Dad was carting into a local mill early this week and the bloke on the intake said "I hope you haven't got barley on everywhere is chock a block with barley rejected from maltings."

Excellent news for pig farmers! A lot of pig diets are being reformulated to have more barley and less wheat as barley is so much better value at the moment.

On the one hand it's good for us... although being B and B we wont see it directly but on the other had it's not that easy selling barley into the mills as they're taking so much malting barley on spot and that in turn is keeping barley prices subdued.

Do you find increased barley in the ration makes pigs loose and wet???

I don't know yet about any digestive effects as the new diets won't be started until the new year I think as we have quite good cover on wheat up to the end of January.
I know that barley doesn't make a very good sow roll so i'm glad that i invested in long troughs last year, meaning that we don't need rolls (for feeding on the ground) any more.

I would sell locally as feed. Just too unpredictable if they’ll turn it down. Both homes have taken thousands of pounds in deductions almost every year from my farm. No come back. I wish the NFU Crops board would even admit there is an issue.

All barley going as feed this year. It’s a lot more fun loading it knowing it’s not coming back.

I would have your barley tested by at least two different merchants, with more samples than required. Do you know which fields the barley came from, how N varies on these fields and germination. When you know your barley intimately you will know yourself whether it’s worth sending (or how to load the lorry #naughty)

Yes, I’m quite the seasoned malting barley grower nowadays, the barley is good consistent quality, on a drying floor with stirrers, moisture well within spec, germ high, confirmed by tests from 5 merchants, should be no problem at all, should be I say...

Ive grown 5500t of Barley in the last 5 years, it’s all made malting of various grades, I’ve had one rejection and a handful of claims in that time, on balance it’s been worth my time and financially it’s been more than worth it, it still hurts when something goes wrong though and normally sending it on a boat is our best option, as soon as East Anglian Maltsters are mentioned I get nervous and the premium has to be many pounds over to even consider sending it across to them
