I heard sainfoin doesn't like acid.
I've just included some in an autumn seeded herbal let but don't think it's come through. Sandy soil, acid prone, here.
What grows well on your soil? We have acid sand and chicory, plantain and yarrow are happy although I can’t get that excited by yarrow yet

We did the same as part of a trial by duchy college, they basically shoved a huge quantity of stuff in a key and saw what grew and what didnt, lucerne did well surprisingly, sainfoin however didnt grow, it's a shame as according to what cotswolds seeds says about it on their website its better than grass 😂
Yep would be great to have a simple key showing how tolerant different plants are to acid vs alkali conditions... But that would be too easy!

Maize copes comparatively well.
Never grown Lucerne but heard that's a no go on acid. First time sowing chicory and plantain last year, chicory took very well. Plantain not so much by still think it'll be good.
Not interested in yarrow at all!
Burnet I also tried in a herbal ley, waiting to see results.
Don't use brassicas very often but watched a webinar with a fella who pit 0.5kg fodder radish with a grass reseed as a nurse crop, looked amazing crop, said he'd step it back to just 0.25kg if he did it again.

Dairying seems to make sense in East Anglia apart from seasonal lower rainfall than the SW.
Will cows graze lucerne, is it a good feed for them?

There is a grazing Lucerne called luzelle, but you wouldn't graze a pure stand, and they don't like it that much. We haven't found it that drought tolerant either. Like most drought tolerant things, like cocksfoot, they don't die as much as ryegrass for instance, but there's not a lot of feed either. I dare say that's because I'm managing it all wrong and one of the holistic grazing crowd will have to use a string of headbanging emojis about this.

That’s interesting regarding drought tolerance. I have a neighbour that has grown 15 ha of Lucerne for cutting in the same field for the last 6 - 7 years. It seems to be the only thing that stays green around here when everything else burns off. It is looking a bit thin now though so guess it needs reseeding every 5 years?
