@Arcbob , @caveman , so you are both retired now and both voted for this.
Are you rolling up your sleeves to help out ?
Why the fekk should I roll my sleeves up for or give a fudge about a greedy barsteward like him?
He wanted to corner the market and have it all to himself... now let him do it himself.
He wasn't crying when he was shafting the hundreds, if not thousands of other farmers who did a few for local sales and markets, along with a few rows of corgettes and strawberries.

Petrol tanker drivers have an ADR qualification as well as a HGV licence. They need this for them to drive petrol tanker lorries.
There is a shortage of HGV drivers. That's a true fact.
However HGV drivers cannot drive a petrol Tanker lorry without having an ADR qualification.
The UK had ADR drivers last week. NOTHING repeat NOTHING changed much in a week. Maybe some holiday or some sickness but not, I doubt a dramatic change.
The ADR drivers that were driving last week are still driving this week delivering fuel. So nothing has changed.
The petrol panic we are now experiencing is all down too media hype.
It's not because of brexit because all the EU drivers went back to Europe. Which is some of the reasons being banded about.
These EU HGV driver's, left months ago, and yet the country was still getting fuel without problems up until today.

So what's changed? Nothing !!

Apart from the disgraceful media hype and scaremongering to make news. Too sensationalise the fact that a couple of petrol stations were getting a late delivery so they closed.

The Result of the media scaremongering!!

Massive panic and chaos by everyone. Which is now causing a shortage of fuel until the ADR drivers, that we already had delivering fuel a few days ago, can deliver again.
The media should be fined and penalised, severely for publicising false news and creating the crazy situation that has been going on all today. Disgusting. They should hold their heads in shame.

And to top it the government have 1000’s of trained military personnel who are available if there was a real fuel crisis. Bloody Media!! Bloody sheep, bloody selfish mentality.

Is the fuel tanker jobbie still the same as it and the train driver jobbie used to be... a closed shop with mega bucks jobs being handed down from fathers to sons?

if I told you that there was going to be a shortage of 10mm spanners and you then told a friend and they told some mates and it got on to social media then the government stepped in and said there are plenty of 10mm spanners and then you start to panic buy so that there then becomes a shortage go 10mm spanners this is exactly what is happening with fuel thus it is a self fulfilling prophecy. there is a shortage of drivers because no one wants the job this has been brewing for many years and has f**k all to do with Brexit there are at least 100k drivers with a licence who do not drive and to be frank I don't blame them. i'm in and out of rdc's and warehouses and there is plenty of stuff in stock and it has been getting out to stores a little slower than usual but when arseholes start panic then there will be shortages
Good job I’ve got several 10mm spanner’s then.

There's more than a suspicion that this 'crisis' has been engineered by the Road Haulage Association to try and bounce the government into letting them get lots of cheap foreign drivers back again, rather than offer UK based ones the pay and conditions that will attract them into or back to the industry. Which may or may not have worked, the government have caved to allow 5000 visas but one suspects they'll struggle to fill them anyway.

Fuel tanker drivers always were the “Creme de la Creme” of HGV driving with the highest pay rates already - but only last year Hoyer tried to make half a dozen redundant and replace them with agency drivers.
I was thinking there was a bit of fuss about Hoyer a while ago but can't remember what it was.

I'd imagine a lot of businesses that rely on cheap, often seasonal, labour are over stating things to try and get some kind of deal from the government.
No different here really, the cheaper temp staff conveyor belt has stopped and people are having to revisit how they do things.

What we are seeing now is the effects of covid, or rather the lockdowns imposed in response to covid. The economy is a very delicate beast, its an ecosystem really, where millions of individuals interact in certain patterns that have emerged over time, many of which are not necessarily fully rational, but are the product of pure habit. Think of a group of mates going to the pub on a Wednesday night as a regular night out. No massive reason to do it, just habit more than anything. Once that habit is broken the behaviour may not restart, and the pub loses some trade. Thus lockdowns have given this ecosystem an massive shaking and now things are settling out in a different manner to how they used to be before, as billions of human interactions are reset in alternative ways. This is why we are seeing the same effects all across western Europe and North America - wherever lockdowns have been imposed on the economy, systemic disruption is emerging as the long term effects kick in. It has very little to do with Brexit or covid itself, lockdowns are the primary cause of our current economic woes.
This totally sums it up I think.
People are reassessing their lives and in many cases not rushing into new things because they have no idea when governments are going to stop them going about their business again.
Its going to take a stable 6 or 12 months for people to commit to new plans. Many might eventually slip back into their old ways but a lot wont.
Maybe it is a big reset?

I bet supply of loads of things are finely balanced due to the whole just in time thing. One word in the press sends the public into an unnecessary buying frenzy. Maybe we should try it with milk or bread

Good question.
To my mind, the natural progression of “get brexit done” is, “make brexit work”

When you see all that is going on in the uk it makes you realize the there is definitely no longer a great in Great Britain.
But unfortunately the cause of this all happened decades ago.
There was a time when Great Britain couldnt be defeated in war.
Its all different now
