I’d love to drive a lorry. If I wasn’t farming it would be next best thing. When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was drive a bus. In those days they had a proper noisy engine and lots of double declutching. That kind of thing always fascinated me. And nothing quite beat the sound of the old fifteen ton grain lorry pulling away up the slope out the yard. I used to think what I’d give to drive that outfit. The driver never looked that happy though after 3 hours sat under our 4” auger spout.😆

It’s all changed though. They want air con and quiet cabs and power steering where I like the noise and heat and the feel of manual steering. Nobody likes breaking into a sweat or some real health and safety defying acrobatics. Then people have ended up like fattened capons with the slightest exertion triggering them into cardiac arrest.

For me as a kid, childcare was being stood in the corner of a Winsam cab in an MF65 minding you didn’t get your toes under the clutch pedal as dad pulled a set of disc harrows and rolls up a steep clay hillside.
I have just quite enjoyed three days in a David brown 1494 cultivating and drilling 40 acres of winter barley. All done now in a rig that cost £3k.For me that’s satisfaction.

BBC reporting that unemployment benefit to be phased out as there'd there's jobs for all and NHS funding to be cut as people will be working outdoors and walking to work.

Downing street currently briefing the Express, Mail, Sun, Mirror and Guardian for tomorrow's front pages.

National debt eradicated by Christmas.
Put that on Facebook and watch
the blind panic & hysteria....

I think collectively as a nation we’ve lost it. Nobody polishes chrome or gets a real shine on cab glass. Nobody builds Crystal set radios. We just sit at keyboards. We spectate. We consume. We are no longer a people of real action. We don’t know what stripping something down and refurbing it is all about. We don’t use oil cans. We aren’t replacing bearings and thinking well that’s something that makes the universe run a bit sweeter. It’s a shame.

Have we heck.
If you look at face book or crappy media you will see plenty of the worst in society, and I despair at these people. I cant understand how their values and thought patterns are so different to mine.
However,,,,
There is a pretty large army of people quietly getting on with work and life. You don't see us or our work often because it is so often overlooked.
We build stuff, we fix stuff, we invent stuff.
We are still here in this nation. We never left.

@Danllan, did you get an hgv in the army? Maybe you could turn a shift or two?
Yep, HGV1, haven't kept up the medicals though. Had an ex RLC chap stay here a few weeks ago who mentioned he'd been offered a driving job - BOC I think - and the starting pay was well over £40k...:woot:

In all honesty, my trailer reversing is fine in a yard - preferably mine - with bvgger all to hit or worry about and as many goes as I need to get it right without an audience; but I'd be sh!tting bricks doing it anywhere confined with other people's very expensive kit there... :arghh:

Why not do both? Wheat and Barley, maybe some grass to let or maize for an AD plant then drive for an agency for nine months a year.
2 or 3 12 hour shifts a week on supermarket delivery and plenty of time to wander around the farm?
