Easy-Calving Hereford Bulls

Hi! I am sure there are far more qualified members on here that could comment on the Hereford on simxchar cows, but I would expect you'd get a good calf. Certainly the temperament of our herd is good, Achiever is a pleasure to work with and his progeny are very quiet. If you are one for EBVs, then Achiever is a trait leader in six of the Hereford EBVs, milk being one of them. He is ten this year and still working. If you are ever up this way then please pop in for a look round, I am always pleased to have someone to talk about cows to!

Looking for a cheap one tho (n)

:D Have a look on Sell My Livestock, might find one a bit closer to you. There are a few Hereford bulls listed on there at the moment. Ours are £2000. TB4, tested for Lepto, IBR, Neospora and BVD and we are accredited for both BVD and Johne's (level 1). We are happy to arrange fertility testing (at cost, and with whichever vet requested as ours is not cheap, sadly).

Report on the Spring Bull Sale at Ervie Herefords, taken from their Facebook page. This was the last group of 91151H sons to sell at Ervie, and he is now living out his twilight years here with us.

We have some lovely yearling bulls by 91151H available this spring, although they are starting to find new homes. One already gone to Hexham, another tomorrow to Shrewsbury, and a viewing this weekend.

Anyone else had problems with the odd monster calf from herefords?

We've put our saler heifers to a hereford. Calved a batch of cows to him in backend and were fine. This spring Had 3 huge calves to him, lost 2. Other heifers have calved to him and had normal calves this spring. Other heifers to saler bulls are calving fine, all had same feeding over winter.

My brother was speaking to another breeder and he reckoned it was throw back to when breed went to the states and they crossed them with big simmentals to improve confirmation.

@Chae1 It's not something we have experienced yet. We have had the odd calf over 50kg, but they have been out of big old cows, that have literally fired them out :D. Most of our calves range between 40kg - 45kg. We do have North American breeding in our cattle, but we run a horned herd, so maybe less crossing way back in the pedigree?

Yes, bought a bull from a very prominent Hereford breeder down my way and it was nightmare:mad: bred for showing not breeding,
Me being a bit green assumed it's a Hereford it'll be easy calving, put him on 20 heifers, 2 born unaided, 6 born dead ( never got going) huge bull calves, the rest all jacked 50kg+ calves, these out of 450 kilo Angus heifers. ruined 3 cows lesson learnt the hard way.
Did my research went up to Scotland bought an Ervie Hereford and calving been as pleasure, 20 down so far not touched them.(y) Can't say enough good things about him!
@Bopeep1981 has probably got the best Hereford bull in the country in 91151(y)
If I'd have been quicker on the draw may have got him myself:rolleyes::ROFLMAO:.(y)

Tiddly little things here, up on their feet quickly though!
Get some bigger ones in the cows but never big enough to be a problem.
Would think it's a throwback in the breeding, not necessarily for external genetics either, there's plenty of hard calving Hereford bulls around :censored:

Thanks @tinsheet , it was a case of right place, right time! :D

Had another 91151H heifer arrive this evening. Went out to move the cow to the calving pen, and she had already had it! Full belly and skipping round the pen by two hours old. Seems to be the way with his calves. Saying that, we haven't had trouble with any of our previous bulls, but the Douglas calves are certainly lively!

The big lads went to their new home yesterday, so just the 12m old show bull, two May bulls and a summer baby left.

We have collected some straws from 91151H this week, which will be available for non-pedigree use from next month. Please PM me for more info.

Another bull sold, and one pencilled in, subject to transport arrangements. :)
Updated advert on Sell My Livestock with videos of the two young bulls. Southgate is definitely available, born July 2018, he is in the first video. Easy-calving, good shape and quiet temperament. https://www.sellmylivestock.co.uk/view/listing/pedigree-hereford-breeding-bulls-F5E71106

Last of the 2018 Achiever 91151H bulls, it'll be next spring before any more are ready for sale.
