Whats everyones experience finishing these. Does the mothers ability to utilise grass better transfer to the lamb and help them finish or are they just like any other maternal cross.
TIA

Get around 50% of whethers and ram lambs off fat before weaning in the twin fields, that’s Exlana x Exlana as building up ewe numbers. I’m sure putting a charollais on them but would get them away faster though so that’s my next plan once I’m at the stage I can have a A-B flock.

No experience of terminal x shedders, but in general, yes. The better utilisation of foraging breeds like Romneys or Highlanders will be partially inherited by their terminal X lambs, so I can’t see why the same wouldn’t be the case with any shedding sheep that were efficient grazers.

However, the bigger ‘engine room’ of an animal that is built to utilise forage better must surely reduce KO% too, something the advocates of such sheep don’t seem to mention.

The sheep/cattle breeds that kill out best are always long and tight gutted, never short and deep through the gut. The more you go that way, it stands to reason that they will be less able to convert forage.

It depends on the terminal - Ive found good grass based Suffolk, Hampshire and char and charmoise terminals are no problem off grass before end of sept, but texels and hobby breeder bag of feed a day type terminals often are going to still require some grain to get the fat finish before they go over 42kg..

its really alot more to do with the quality of your tups.

........there'll be a few fit at weaning but they only graze some fairly extensively managed grass on a nature reserve. Can't fault the lambs though.
