Howdoyou copewith cooking/eating supper late at night during the harvest season. I am sure most of us do not like eating late11/12 at night. Does your other half cook a meal for the family and keeps yours warm,or do you call her when you are near finishing the day and she cooks a meal,or do you cook your own supper via microwave. I am sure we all eventually get fed up with fish and chips suppers eaten on the move!!!

If thing are going well we are normally in the yard 10:30'ish in which case it is a quick drink together, my super that has been left on a plate into the microwave, me into shower, eat and bed. Happy to work later if required but there are not enough of us for proper shift work and you soon loose your focus if you are over tired.

The younger generation were spoilt on other farms and like Mum to bring them a hot super:whistle:, I don't want anything more complicated than a sandwich on a tractor.

Once the combine starts there are no real breaks until the drill stops, was it always like that?

Try living on your own :-/ cooking, shopping, cleaning. When work gets busy standards drop quickly, not the first time I've been in tesco's at 1am doing my shopping, best bit of kit in my kitchen is a slow cooker, mince n veg or a stew, fill it up night before then switch on low when leaving in the morning, normally passing house atleast once in the day to either switch it off or check it if in for lunch, then when getting in late there's something ready, might just need to give a plate full a quick blast in the microwave to heat up, a full cooker can do a good 3-4 meals

Do what you want when you want and with who you want is all well and good but would be nice now n then to come into a clean house with a full fridge and a hot meal ready every now n then :-/

Worst thing working for a contractor is you always take 3 meals in lunch box even if only a short 12hr day as could always turn into a 16hr one. Then you get home hungry and all you can be bothered to eat is another sandwich which is a bit of a busmans holiday!!
Been into local garage mini mart before after 3wks 100hr/wk and filled the lime spreader up with provisions, back to the yard ,unload then spread 50t more.

my arse yer in yer ivory tower getting the minions to do the work unless you decide to gain a bit respect by driving the combine fer half an hour,

Not long ago I drove a lexion for 32hrs without a break to get osr finished before rain, Main combine driver still asks me for setup help, I'm only relief driver now but I will do any September combining we have left I'm not quite a useless office gimp just yet !

I wish I could do it all still, love the job, best place to be at harvest

Done my fair share, if I'm honest I never really feel in love with driving tractors but a combine is a job I've always enjoyed and rarely tired off

Being a domestic goddess I always ensure hubby has a hot meal and chilled beer in front of him no matter what time he gets in as that is my purpose in life as his servant. His towel is warmed before his shower and his clothes freshly laundered for the next day.
