To every one saying an expensive jack is better, any old jack will do to lift whatever you want to lift. You should ALWAYS support everything while jacking it with axle stands or appropriate wooden blocks. Jack it up, support it, take weight slightly off jack then remove the wheel. I wouldn’t trust a gold plated, titanium built £3million pound jack to hold anything up. It’s axle stands that should be invested in not expensive jacks

Agreed. Although this style of jack is just as safe, I love mine.

Unfortunately nearly £20 to deliver that to NI. Otherwise it seemed good value for having a 2 year warranty

I see Dennis Wilson has two On his website. The first looks exactly the same as the sgs one.

and this look the same.

probably better to go and have a look, if you’re not far from Glenavy.

I bought a cheap 2 stage 20 ton jack from ebay a few years ago (under £50). It works well and I'm very happy with it. It doesn't seem to be any different in quality to a smaller branded one we have.
How many of you guys are actually wanting to lift 20 ton with a jack? I doubt ours will ever be used on more than 5 ton and rarely more than 2 or 3 since we don't have any monsterous machinery but a 20 ton jack is fat, stable and much safer than a scrawny little jack working on it's limit
Yeh I would rarely need to lift anything that heavy but then that's no good the day that we actually do need to lift 20T. Flat tyres are rarley at a convenient time. Judging by the responses, peace of mind might make me get a better branded one  .

He's within driving distance. All these brands aren't making their own jacks so it's hard to know who is charging more for the name on the side.

This thread proves the point of get it made cheap and sell it expensive, as expensive means really good to a lot of people, I often wonder if its just a British thing?

Only thing about going to Dennis Wilson's is how much you spend before you leave 🙈

I have 2 bottle jacks a 20ton and a 12ton that will extend as normal without a load, but put even 0.5 tonne of a lift on them and all they do is rise when the plunger lever is activated and then fall again.

Is it a non return valve has failed ?

Worth pulling them apart to try and fix or give them to the scrap man ?
There should be an air bleed valve, store upright. Most known brands have seal kits available, ask stockist to confirm hydraulic oil grade.

I was using fathers favourite 6 ton bottle jack to try and take the bow out of the front weight box I was making when I was younger. 7/8ths thick plate, had the jack so I couldn’t make the handle go down any more... then I remembered that it was the kind you had to push the handle in so it cleared the stopper at the bottom of the stroke so it would go down further to lower the load... It was a worrying few minutes till I managed to get another jack in beside it to help share the load and could release the pressure!

I laugh when I see the two ton hole in my light engine hoist, as if!

Whilst I agree with the point about support - having seen what can happen when "any old jack" gives way during the jacking process I would beg differ on not buying decent jacks!

They still charge extra for NI

Found another one ... EU made, Spain if they are any better than China of course.
