EDF Energy - Doubling Charges

Apologies if not in right section.

Need to get something of chest and warn others if not already aware.

Father built steel frame building on outlying land about 25 years ago, proper job, concrete floor, apron area etc etc.

Decided at same time to have power put on, just in case, EDF.

Father passed away and I now manage on behalf of mother.

Average annual electricity consumption less than £10 annually.

We reluctantly accept that we have to pay a standing charge.

Last week mother received letter from EDF saying effective 25/01 charges will be doubling from 25p to 50p a unit. Daily standing charge will be doubling from £1 to £2 per day.

Totally understand unit charge may need to rise given current market, but £730 standing charge annually - really???

Once we have worked through the cost of disconnection, and potentially cost of reconnection if needed in the future, it looks as though it’s going to be goodbye EDF hello generator!

That is a heck of a hike Our farm buildings meter is on an estimated 177kWh annual use, though in reality our use is generally lower, just 2kWh last month... I do expect our 24p/kw to double when our contract renews but we still have 14months on a 2 year fix with E-ON... Our standing charge is 39p/day. Whilst energy costs have increased I cant see how they can possibly justify a doubling in the standing charge!

Just prompted me to think more about this.... given for more than the next year our buildings meter rate is probably half what most will be paying per kWh, suggestions how can I bottle it and resell it with a margin? Install a bank of Tesla fast chargers? When the farm house electric doubles I might have to resort to running cables from the farm buildings meter to power items in the house

I have had the same letter, the standing charge is a killer. Will start looking around at alternatives but I am on a business rate so might not be easy. Could be bye bye EDF for supply and it makes battery storage for my solar panels start to look more viable.

I believe that there are 'no standing charge' tariffs available, probably much dearer per/kwh, but may be worth it.
We'll be looking into this ourselves as we're having a new supply put to the farm buildings which will use very little electricity (mainly lighting)
