Effective Fly Spray for fogger?

Are there still good "knock down" fly sprays available for use in a fogger to clear flies before we start milking?

Bought 2x 5 lts of my usual fly spray in a box, got home to find although its the same make and name the formulation has changed . Now water based not oil and no pyrethroid listed.

If it works it takes far too long to get rid of the flies, by which time both man and beast have lost their cool.

My OLD fogger does not like being deprived of the oil base!
We have 3 fans , a water curtain and treat the cows , but still need a clear out at the start of milking.
Fly numbers have exploded over the last few days.

Flys here have been worse than last summer and have been for weeks,I said to dad a couple weeks ago I don’t think the fly spray has worked anything like it used too this time round, even the morning milkings are a pain at the minute

Thats interesting - we have an old Turbair fogger , and I put some Flymax in it and thought I had put some Citronella oil stuff in by mistake . I would say it works -eventually .but we end up shutting the fans off and shutting the doors until the buggers eventually drop .
It has a white tint and smells of citronella to me ,whereas the older Flymax we had , was clear with a yellow tinge!! So your explanation sounds right to me !!

I dont suppose anyone knows of a decent hand pump fly sprayer is on the market ??(probably similar to the old Flit type wouldnt be a bad thing, as those poxy hand things that come with all sorts of liquids are shyte to say the least!!! )

I’ve used the 10l pump sprayers for garden weeds in the past.

Thanks . I dont like all that ruddy pumping , then you get a pathetic spray from them !! I liberated a hand held one from the house tonight ,and we use it under the cows and over them from the pit once units are on . I dont like the new 'weak as pee' fly spray as much ,but I find its probably better in a hand held job ,for the user ,than the oil based stuff with the pyrethen stuff !
But we tend to use loads for 70 cows ,so you lads with mahoosive numbers and parlours must get through gallons:rolleyes:

I dunno whats worse dosing yourself with pyrethroids every day or covering the cows in citronella and garlic which would no doubt end up tainting the milk?

Stagnant pools of water are loaded with fly larvae this time of year.

Not sure what you guys have available over there but we have a walk through sprayer for the cows to go through. Can generally get 1200 cows with about 8-10 gallon. It is a permethrin oil based spray.

In addition to the fly control on cows we also focus on keeping things clean as possible around and in barn. Very few flies around the milking parlor now days. And use https://www.valleyvet.com/swatches/34445_L_vvs_000.jpg this bait stuff around the farm.

We can get horrendous amounts of flies here, so bad that you have to keep your mouth closed and face covered when in the cloud.

Haven’t used any fly spray for 20 years, well since I put milk meters in,last few nights have been pretty bad here.

Why ? Because of effect of spray on plastic ?
If so maybe the very slow to act water based fly spray might have a role, but I just don't have the patience to wait for it to work.

Yes because the spray cracks the plastic.

Sprayed the 1st couple of sides with water tonight, cooled things down but the weather is perfect for them at the minute.

Half an hour before milking I switch fans on ( 2 large ones. One at front and one mid way )
damp down the whole parlour ( keep it cool)
Switch home made 'mister' on ( old nozzles from a sprayer and 25mm pipe.
NEVER have the lights on
Have milked tonight and only used about 400ml fly spray in a hand held sprayer

400ml sounds alot to me for one milking, unless its the new water based one with no pyrethroid.

On bad days we let both sides in parlour, fog parlour and collecting yard,go away for a few mins to let flys clear, then keep collecting yard clear with fogger operated from parlour on a pull cord switch but try to avoid using spray in parlour itself.
Also have fans and water curtain
