One for the NFU. It is going to be a big problem especially with the threat of EID in cattle as well. Bad tag retention, unreliable chips and incompatible/unreliable readers is a serious issue we should not be trying to work around when it has been forced on us by others.

Get the tech sorted and farmers are more are likely to embrace it, otherwise it’s just a fudge that we will (are) going to resent.

@Guy Smith , a shout for you on this one ;)

I had an issue last year with my reader (rs420) reading anything other than shearwell tags.
I was told that shearwell tags use a slightly different technology to most and my reader had developed a fault which meant it couldn’t read them.

yer would think all eid tags and readers should be. all on the same system
bit like. John Deere with there older style fuel filters. and the hex shaped bearings on there balers years ago
any reader should be able to read any tag totally BS if. only attached to one brand

It turned out to be an issue with the power supply as later it wouldn't turn on. Beyond economic repair :(

Need my BPS in the bank before I can afford to replace it.

View attachment 756740View attachment 756742anyone a preference for these types of tags, the one on the right are only just approved in Ireland, any pro or cons??????
might sound strange but check the bottom ones. the male pin can't. go right though. the tag and get locked on the outside of the tube looking bit
had some tags here. that did that and there was not eneff air flow around the tags and ear leading to ears getting infected

Cheers. With Eid compulsory here from mid summer on I want one that works well with agrident reader on psion. Can see your point. Seen stores lambs in north with them but not sure on retention rate or potential infections

had alflex tags here years ago the reuseable ones and found the male. pin could get hooked up on. the female tag the tamper proof (which is a joke as you only need to cut the tag out ) the male pin can't. go over centre. if that makes sence
the shear well tags put in here did have a good retention rate and good reads on them

All Shearwell tags now and can’t think i’ve had more than one or two that won’t read, not sure if age of the chip is a factor yet as our oldest are about 6 years.
Roxan tags however that are in draft ewes (5years old) will often have at best 90% read rate, even some newer tags can have a lot of dead ones so i assume roxan use a cheaper chip than Shearwell.
I use a tru-test reader.

Also I find in the weigh crate the auto reader on it goes constantly on the Shearwell tags but often quite slow on older Roxans as if they are harder to read.
