A customer of mine has one of the 1st teslas.
M.D of large shipping company,no big problems but when i asked him if it was his money would he buy one he said no.apperently the figures don't stack up and the inconvenience of charging etc means if he goes on holiday he has to plan his routes so precisely and always worried what if that charge station isn't working

My IFA is on his fourth I think. Jag now, BMW before and Merc before that. Can’t remember what the first one was. He leases them and keeps telling me it’s a no brainer. Given how canny he is with money, there must be something in it.

The long distance thing wouldnt be such an issue for us as father in law has a 6berth camper so if goin on hols in uk most likely would be takin it and if for some reason i needed to go far i could get me mas car for a day or 2. Im movin house shortly and will be considerin solar panels, so that why im lookin at possibly an electric car down the line but i like to buy a car and pay for it there so finance or hire isnt gonna work for me.so would be few years old so just wonderin if any1 has had to replace batteries. Also how many panels would i need to charge the car

At work we ran a second generation Prius, at 85k miles the battery became a major problem and it was not economic to repair. Be interesting to know if later 100% electric vehicles fare better. As I usually buy vehicles with around 80k miles on the clock and expect to run them cheaply to 250k miles not been tempted by a hybrid never mind a full electric.

Our Tesla is coming up to 7 years, 6 with us. Over 90k on the clock, might be about 5% loss of range.
The Leaf 30kWh we have had over 6 years, something like 10% loss in range over 75k miles, but the Leaf batteries were a poor design with no thermal management, and probably give the worst performance of any EV battery.

Don't get a car, get an electric twin cab pickup,
Then when you on holiday with caravan or long distance trips, chuck an old Lister start o matic genny plant in the back, it will look after itself 👍

As for solar, a 3 phase charger uses about 11kw . So you would need approx 15kw (60 panels) of panels to charge solely on solar at noon on the best days of the year.

The average domestic array of 4kw, would reduce your bills. But its probably cheaper to use night rate electric for charging unless you have a lot of panels and maybe a battery storage.

Either way its alot cheaper than buying petrol/ diesel.

Governments should be stipulating that car makers need to make it possible to repair or replace batteries in electric cars. They are so stringent with electrical appliances these days but cars it seems are a different issue?
Can you not already do this? The market for repalcement batteries for electric fork trucks is huge... Are the batteries vehicle specific?
