Electric cars long term owners

Coal makes up about 10% of the USA's power generation. In the UK renewable energy is a lot higher, up to 40% and is climbing annually.

E=mc^2 doesn't show that at all - the full equation would, but it'd more appropriate to use Newton's equations.

Manufacturing an electric car is very environmentally impact, but so is making a petrol or diesel car. To make this an 'excellent breakdown' you'd actually need to compare the two life cycles. Ditto for the discussion on solar panels and wind farms - building a coal/gas/nuclear power station isn't without significant resource usage! Easiest way to compare resource use is cost, and renewables have been beating conventional energy on cost for years.

As I understand in, when assessing the lifetime energy costs, electric cars become better after 80k miles or so. Which is a slight improvement when car last ~150k miles. This should drop as efficiencies in mass production kick in, where ICE have a big head start.

A significant benefit not mentioned is removing air pollution from population centres.

Anyway, I wouldn't rate this as 'excellent'.
The amount of concrete going into hinckley C is mind boggling.

There was a item on R4's "more or less" program which looked at how long it took for an ev to pay back the extra carbon costs of build.
I think they came up with 2 years of average use in the UK, though much more in the USA due to less renewable energy sources as you point out.
And if you charge off your own renewables....
Friend has just got a Kia ev6 after having a bmw i3 little thing for four years. She said it’s a better car in terms of range etc but it’s so boring to drive
Boring in what sense?
It goes like stink.

Of course, electric cars might seem a no-brainer to those of us in Europe and in smaller countries. For people in Australia or North America, where the distances between cities, town and the holiday spots is so much greater, suddenly it isn't so straight forward. I've known Americans who would think nothing of a 90 miles drive to work out of state.

Saw one up close at a dealer yesterday. Get a fantastic write up, and are supposed to be the best available. From a distance I liked the look first time- up close was less impressed. Long lead time also put me off a little. Will be interesting to see what the Genesis version coming to the UK will do...

Hinkley C will be amongst the last of that design of nuclear reactor ever built. Their huge up front capital cost basically makes nuclear power of that sort non-economic without government assistance.

As it stands, I think we can expect to see 10 times as much coal power being built in the next 70 years than what we see operational today. That is, unless we have some other rethink about how nuclear power is regulated and designed and operated.

Can't get a test drive in the Model Y so far, and all I get from Tesla is "it's the same as a Model 3, only taller", which doesn't fill me with confidence- albeit I liked the M3. Think it's going to be too small for what I need- model 3 certainly is, and worry the PS2 will be too...
We had a 30 minute test drive booked for last Saturday at Tesla Birmingham.
The traffic was so bad around there that we just drove it round their car park!
Anyway, it was terrific and much more spacious than I thought it would be.
With 3 children and 2 adults the VAG ev’s and the Polster aren’t spacious enough for us, but the Model Y is.

Enyaq not spacious enough?! First time I've heard that criticism 😀
Though the boot is no bigger than I expected, being as it is bigger than most of the competitors.

Booked in for the Model Y test next week now. Two youngsters and a need to tow, so 3 wouldn't cut the mustard.

Ipace is becoming slightly outdated regarding fast charging and range , neither of which are vital for many.

But as a car its very good, silent smooth, comfortable yet very fast when your 'on private roads'.

As side bonus it now has Alexa built in, so you can choose practically any sound track to your private road test drive.

your use is not really normal I’m sure you would agree ? not many are doung800 miles in 1.5 days very often

if I was in your situation I wouldn’t even consider EV

I believe the average car dies 80 miles a week ?

our EV is doing 20,000 a year, 180-200 miles a day on weekdays and for that it works absolutely perfectly
200 miles a day every week day for a family car? Bloody hell.
Perhaps everyone should just drive less instead of arguing which type of fuel is best?

school is 27 miles each way (at x4 journeys a day ) - 6 days a week ! plus all the other family miles / shopping / going out / hockey and cricket matches etc

gets a lot of use so the cumulative savings are big for us

Just priced up replacing a pickup and golf finishing leases with elec so I need 4x4 and towing ability in one vehicle as well as a car like feel.
Porsche Cayenne E-hybrid S is £1250/month + vat for 24 months or £960/month + vat for 36 months.
Land Rover 110 P400e dynamic for 36 months is £2000/month + vat.
These are both lease deals but the LR is certainly not an option as that price is just silly. I just do not see any value in elec at all at these prices. I can lease another ranger and golf for £650/month + vat for both.

They're not electric, they're hybrids. And £2000/month? I can't find one on google anywhere near that price. 6-800 maybe.

Are you really comparing like with like. High end Cayenne/Defender vs Ranger and Golf. Why not get an electric daily run around and a Pickup/ Korean 4x4 for towing.

No I’m trying to find 1 elec car to do the job of two ice cars, hence why I’m so restricted to what’s available. The two ice cars are doing 7k miles each per year so makes sense to find one elec to do both.

I know but there’s no such thing as an full elec 4wd that I can see 🤷🏻‍♂️. And the defender quote came direct from my local LR dealer. I went in and specced up the 110 and that’s what they came back with. £2000 down then £2000/month for 36 months. Full warranty & service included and 15k miles per year. I haven’t compared it to any other deals.
