Electric fence shock

Got an Electric Shepard ESB 200
Got the earth connected to a galvanised post . The red power lead connected to the fence Had the unit turned on and went to connect the red battery lead to the battery, got a shock . Got an electric fencer tester and touched the battery + terminal and got a regular reading , the same if I connected to the - terminal . Any ideas what’s going on ?

And secondly did you get a shock before touching the battery? Or after?

Are the battery leads shorting onto the fence lead or vice versa?

Sorry for dodgy picture , I grabbed the red battery clip to save turning off the unit . That’s when I got the initial shock . I haven’t got the red leads mixed up either . The battery ones are a two core lead as you should be able to see

Looks like red lead to fence is touching the black lead to battery. Insulation all ok on both wires?

I used to have trouble with the insulation on the leads cracking. I don't know if this made a difference or not but I would get all sorts of shocks when I shouldn't.

Try moving the fencer off the earth post. How deep is the earth post?

Normal. Some back emf from generating the high voltage.

Is it new? If not, take the cover off and check inside. Mine was full of earwigs? once.
