Best electric fencers I’ve had are Pel 705s from kiwi kit, not cheap to buy but being solar powered theres no battery’s to buy but more importantly as they never suffer a weak battery I’ve never had anything go through a fence with one.
It’s not quite true about not having a battery to change they do have a small motorbike battery in them that the solar panel charges, I haven’t had to replace one yet.
For the most part I agree with you,the one flaw I have with mine is for one 4_6weeks in winter I don't get enough sunlight to charge fully.( I turn it off after I get the horses in the morning and turn back on at night when they go out, so not a biggie for me)

@Andyt880 @steveR What do I need to buy off the internet to make my own solar charger?
Quick vist to eBay.

What are you wanting to power is the first question before spending a penny .

A small electric fencer through the summer is a totally different ball game to running 5km of sheep wire in mid Winter. ;) A water pump to a water tank is a real power hog!

Once you know the likely drain on your battery, then you can suss out what size panel you need and a charge controller to match. Calculate for a decent battery too, something like an 80amp leisure battery is a good all rounder.

Summat like this will do a fencer most of the year.

I used Gallagher s100 or per 705s and they are excellent IMO. Very rarely have an animal out. The trick is to try and keep as little live wire running off one as possible. They are very hardy, I've lost a gallagher solar fencer out of a UTV at 30mph on the road and watching it tumble down the road shedding plastic casing and cables was sickening, but once recovered it still works perfectly. They are a bit more expensive than a solar panel and fencer separately, but a lot more portable and hardy.

I used to use a decent mains or battery fencer to train stock, but since having all animals moved daily on cell grazing they learn to respect electric fences from about a week old and I just use solar fencers, all year round.

I stick with the Rutland esb's. 325's on green crop or sheep runs over 6k and for training in Autumn. Then onto 200's or 202's. The 202's don't seem to last anything like the 200's do though. I don't like spending a lot on units, they seem to walk off a bit too regularly to invest lots in each one. I do buy second hand 200's if I se them on eBay. Even if it's just to scavenge them for parts.

They ‘walk off a bit too regularly’ but you ‘buy secondhand 200s if you see them on eBay’? Have you managed to buy one of your own back yet??

Not yet. I do engrave my name on the back of them so I should know if I buy one of my own back. £60 on eBay is still better than £160 for a new one. The thought has crossed my mind many times "which poor sod has lost a unit this week?"

This is more or less what I’m using for mine @white_stuffed a 40w panel and very similar controller.
