Electric motor for driving a baler

Looking to have a static baler in a shed.
Does anyone know who supplies large electric motor units to drive balers and feeder wagon?

Probably at 50KW, It would probably be easier on power to use a hydraulic motor and feed it from a hydraulic pump

My neighbour has a static mixer wagon. It’s not huge but holds enough to feed 300 sheep a tmr ration for a day. It’s driven bu a ten hp single phase motor. Geared down to the correct speed. It’s a factory conversion. If you have three phase I’d buy a 50 hp and get it geared to the right speed and try it.

Im surprised you can get a 10hp motor on single phase, I thought 5hp would be the max, it must have some type of star delta type starter

I have a 15hp Single Phase 480 volt motor rotting on an old centrifugal grain drying fan ( Split phase using a manual starter and a capacitor the size of a milk crate) Used to take around 65 seconds to get up to speed. It'd need rewinding and a new capacitor to work though....
Its a "Higgs" motor described by the electrician of the day as "Higgs is pigs !"

I would think something little the setup I got for my dryer would do the job. Speaker to Josh at Recon Dryers and see if he can build it to your spec.

Should have mentioned big square baler, so I would think a three phase powered by a generator would be easier

If you are using a generator it would be far more efficient to drive it directly via a shaft

Look into SEW motors, very good experience with them. Add a Danfoss inverter to run it on single phase.

here in Canada ten hp is the largest that can be run on 240 volts single phase. I’ve a bunch of 7.5hp fan motors and have bought three tens for larger bins. I’m maxed for power with everything else around the farm so putting in a generator to run the grain bun fans and dryer.

We have 3 phase if we need it

By the time you buy a power plant of any description and rigged it all up you could probably buy an older tractor and dedicate it to driving the baler. It would be the right speed and be cheaper get running. Even if you had an extended driveline to have the tractor outside.

I bought this at a farm sale. 40kW. Described as a generator, but what's the difference? If I never get round to attaching it to a bruiser, or it turns out to be DOA, comfort will be taken in that the cable wrapped around it will fetch enough as scrap to cover the modest outlay.

In theory you can run a generator as a motor, but suspect it would take a pretty good sparky to change it. As a 40kw genny I would have thought there would be no difficulty selling it. In fact time we have converted everything to Electric, I suspect it will become highly valuable

That was also at the back of my mind. Where's the harm in charging a leaf with a smokey old Ford?

It will certainly smoke if they wont sell any more diesel and you have to run it on cold pressed rape
