27 Didn't get 3 he got 2 nd I did not have him in the top 5

Here's the score sheet.

Still scratching my head but then again I suppose the name carried more weight than the plot....

With the greatest of respect Dealer I think you need a lot more experience before arguing with the judges decision, also your photo only shows one aspect of the plot and one end so cannot be judged here, but my take on your own plot photo is that you hadn't really started ploughing until 5-7 yards away from the end, you must match the work from one end to the other or else non of it will count, the work is only as good as the worst bit, harsh criticism I know but I have received plenty of harsh on my way up, you have the right idea on asking the judge the question though and most are wiling to walk your work with you as long as you are willing to listen

Just to add, look at your points for opening- quite low, if your opening is poor, chances are your start will be poor which also shows, all these places are where you have lost points, to win in the open classic you need to be scoring 15/16 points with each aspect

Hi Roy

Yes your right about me needing more experience before arguing with judges

I wanted to ask him why he thought plot 27 was better than 3 other plots I thought (and do did many) thought were better. See quote above in this post from grease monkey above he ploughed the lower plot to 27.

In no why was I expecting to win I was confused on the scores

Yes I had a poor opening I was to shallow and had a hard tramline I did not get the plough to cut through.

My start was much lower than my neighbour with much less trash showing and straighter

He only scored 2 points more for his opening so both the same really.

I had a good score for uniformity so at all matched quite well.

I seem to have an issue getting firmness right I try going faster the loose furrow definition slower and the firmness goes

I am always trying to improve always looking at how I get better I only stay to the end so I can take a picture of the score sheet to see what was good and bad.

I would have loved to walk to the plot with the judge but he had gone.. or anyone else I want to hear about the bad more than the good that's how I learn.

Pete ploughed 29 next to me and said I was making a good job

I was happy that I came 6th ish out of 15 but I was confused when the scores came in to which plot I needed to look at to beat next time when I went back to look after the results.

I walked all the plots with the score sheet on my phone

Tony M. And others went to clear up yesterday and apparently all of them agreed with my view on plot 27.

My take is White sticks first, sunlight but untidy second. grubby heap third!
i would agree with this, but thats only on the crown and genral apperance, as i cannot see the opening splits, finish, ins/out, or walk it for firmness, then i cannot say who won overall

edit,, you really need to be at least 1 point ahead of the rest in each aspect, to win
lossing points early on cannot be made up later

Thanks for the score sheet Dealer, I think it was one of those days that we can gain experience from. My opening and start were no good and as Roy said to loose points early on is only going to effect the rest of the plot.

No worries

It was my finish that let me down to high with the first furrow to the ploughing.

reaching my objective of coming in the top half of the field was good enough for me enjoyed the day and did the best I could on the plot.

Yes certainly learning every match on to next week..

Richard Holt was your judge, apparently he had an appointment to keep so couldn't hang on until the end, one thing I do know, it wouldn't matter to Richard whether you were prince Charles or Saddam Hussain
he would still judge the ploughing not the name, would you like me to pass your comments forward to him ?

Yes it was Richard Holt I did know who he was but unsure if he remembered me from his previous employment, but this has no influence on what I have said.

I have no problem about you passing comments on to any body as I have made them In a public forum and would have ask him the same questions if he had been there.

My comments were not made with any disagreement about my own score.

I also have no axe to grind we the ploughman in question, I have also known him for many years without any issues.

It is about the plot that was awarded 2nd place and how he had come to that decision, and why he felt it was better than others. (it all comes down to personal views) and we are all different.

I did not canvass opinion about the plot, these were comments made to me and others when we were stood at the end of the plots and other ploughmen commenting on who had ploughed what and how, as we all do at each match.

I have never been frightened to say it how I see it (if I am proved wrong) I am big enough to hold my hands up and say I am wrong, it would not be the first time either!!

If this is match ploughing so be it, its not that important I my life in the great scheme of things, just something I decided to try for myself because I am associated with the industry and had some kit in the shed and thought it seemed a good way to enjoy both meeting new people and learning a new skill.

I wont take it so seriously in future.

One thing it wont effect is my integrity.

I will buy you a beer when we next meet up to celebrate your result and we can set the match ploughing world to rights..

Not a criticism aimed at you dealer - just my thoughts - match ploughing is about someones subjective view of your work - I have always said that if you cant hack that then your in the wrong game - find one that involves black and white decisions. Doesnt stop me wondering how on earth some places are awarded though ;)

Nice to see some good old banter with you all holding back lol
I think if it helps him to stay ploughing it should be allowed but not operated off the seat
Turn a handle by hand or drill or motor what different but only operated off the tractor
We hold a ploughing match on our arable ground and i cannot wait for the day you all realise you require a level opening and finishing not a bigger hill and deeper rut the better lol
i get fed up having to level up the field before i can plough it
My local club even invited JCB to have a open day what a mess they made
So at your next meetings put forward a motion to go level and think of us poor tractor drivers that have to go with the tram lines and across yor hills and hollers for the rest of the year lol
We cannot afford posh tractors with suspension
Hope you keep getting keen young ones to pass on your know how to
