This is going to be a serious issue for both business owners and individuals this year. There appears to be a real lack of desire from the government to look at the issue, presumably as it puts the onus on the general public to look at renewable energy as an alternative.

Had a renewal letter from British gas a few weeks back, went from 17p to 51p and standing charge from 20p to 60p . That was for a 3yr contract.
Whats the justification for standing charge going up threefold?

Surely its the gas they burn to generate that costs more, the generation gear and wires shouldn't cost that much more....

We changed to British Gas in September as E-on were putting prices up massively. Now On a three year contract paying 19p and a standing charge of 30p. Thought I was doing well but the smart meter is too smart for its own good - had some big bills in November and December. Looking at batteries for our solar but doesn’t look promising. Seems daft we have this solar array which electricity is robbed from but we pay through the nose for it back.

I had similar from my supplier before the last renewal, saying that I would be reverting to their variable rate tariff (with similarly extortionate rates) at the end of the contract.
When I rang to kick off, they matched other quotes from elsewhere on a 4 yr contract. I guess they are hoping some people do nothing and just revert to the high rate tariff?
