Electricity tariffs/Prices

At these rates it's becoming more cost effective to plaster buildings with solar and have dsl genny back up?

My current bill for milking shed etc is 1400 a month on 15 and 12. Steady all year round..

If my rates go to those being discussed above it's going to hurt big time!!

Time to get the abacus out to check on costs of generating my own with solar n dsl..

And then you get to sell your excess PV at silly money. No-brainer.

We have a firm coming tomorrow, new robot shed going up next week could have 50kw panels on it by Christmas

Edit................ Sh** Contract never came through, think prices have been pulled, start again on Monday. Not impressed.

Just Phoned NFU energy 024 7669 8885

Don't trust my hearing but I got him to repeat twice.

Called British gas who we are currently with to try and beat them down, no movement at all from letter price, see above.
Did you have the BG offer letter which promised an extra 10% discount for renewing online ?
Only to be told that any online renewals have been pulled even though it is there in black and white !!

The bottom line is you cannot allow solar panels and a generator to work in parallel. They must be electrically isolated at all times. If solar inverters “see” voltage from a generator, they will attempt to sync with the generator and backfeed power to it. Any time solar production exceeds loads in the building, solar inverters attempt to send power to the utility grid. As a huge “battery” of sorts, the grid can handle this small amount of backfeed. Typical residential standby generators cannot.

I have a drop out switch that kills the solar when the power drops off, as the genny auto starts.

That was an oversight I made when I installed PV. You'd get a power cut, the genny and changeover would kick in, the PV would sync to the genny, hit it with 150kw, and it'd try to turn its alternator backwards. I had to hastily put in resettable contactors that isolate the PV whenever there's a loss of mains.

That said, the DNO did an upgrade on the system locally, and insisted the only time they could get it done was in the middle of summer at the back end of the cycle. We were at peak demand electricity wise. I did reboot the PV to take the stress off the genny, but was carefully mananaging it by only turning on a few of the strings at a time and making sure draw remained comfortably above whatever the PV was contributing.

I was glad when that day was over.

spoke to opus and they arent even offering contracts to anyone ending before april, variable rate is fixed at 40p day 29p night for next 6 months.

What’s changed for price to be dropping?
Its not it's a slight steady increase on the continent.
France has lots of nuclear, it's an exporter.
UK is short of gas , electric and fuel in general.
EDF is majority owned by the French state, keeps a lid on the cost here and makes up by charging more for exports.
Thanks by the way👍

It's a weird state of affairs. Though this hasn't happened, yet, I could have been in a situation where I'd be exporting suplus PV at 5.7p / kw, it could cloud over and find myself buying it back for 40p/kw.

How the hell the energy producers have managed to turn the entire country into a sellers' market with all of us over a barrel when our contracts expire is a testament to an epic lack of foresight by the powers that be.
