Electricity to new yard

1 phase would be fine for what we need, but it is worth going to 3 phase for future potential? Big difference in installation cost?

last new connection I got there was only £100 difference between single and three phase, defiantly worth asking the question.

I would always go three phase ware possible as long as it’s not going to brake the bank, your better off looking at it, as looking for it.

Well mine for a similar distance, 45kva 3 phase including transformer upgrade and 10 foot of road crossing is 12.5k +vat. 5k of that is for the road crossing 2.5k of the 5k is for closing the road !.

unfortunately I still can’t afford it so I’m running off a PTO 3 phase genny which isn’t ideal but will have to do !.

Yours sounds very cheap? 12.5K for a transformer and road crossing. Ideal.

Automatic choice for 3 phase surely.

I have to say that we have found Western Power extremely helpful and easy to work with. We had a 170 KVA installation 100 m across our field but with a new transformer and post in a neighbour's field and it cost £28k with us digging the trench from the transformer. Not cheap but I thought acceptable and when they tweaked the design slightly which saved us money they were apologetic for not suggesting it sooner! My gripe is the daily capacity charge you have to pay even if you only use the full capacity for a few days per year and we can predict when we will probably need it at least 12 months in advance!

Update... it's not quite as simple as connecting up to existing lines apparently...

Got a quote for single phase and 3 phase, quote below:

I think anything over 70kva goes on half hourly metering.
Last renewal I was speaking to Scot power. Talking about £700 / year charge for half hourly metering charge.
Went back to BG Went through the figures, they never mentioned a half hour metering charge, so I renewed with them

I think I’d be putting that on a credit card before they change their minds. I paid the same amount to drop of a pole and connect 10m away, and I put in the duct.

Didn't ask for any specific size, may have mentioned that I don't want to spend to much...

I'm probably best speaking to an electrician about the KVA/amp stuff as I've no idea what it all means tbh. Generator is certainly tempting at those prices - no one seems to think they're too expensive though?

You only buy it once. Farm we worked on put in a generator and it's been nothing but a pain.

We are on a 100kva transformer, 100amps per phase 3phase supply. Dad put it in when he built the yard 40yrs ago and it was about £1k back then and had all the cables installed and fuses but we only operated single phase meter off one phase till about 5yrs ago. The upgrade to 3 phase was a new meter at a cost of £85, if he hadn't done that the upgrade would have been 15k plus
