Wasn't that Christian versus Christian? Compared to the Crusades which were Christian versus Moslem - competitor religion.

As for me well as I am getting a bit older I am about to start hedging my bets. Am going to attend Church, chapel, Mosque, Prayer rooms, Buddist whatever. Hate to get to pearly gates to find I backed the wrong horse, as it were.

That makes you very English, as being English is a mix of of different races.
As a Cornishman I find it funny when English people go on about immigrants as that's what the larger majority of English people are.
As for the Cornish we're among the ancients of this land but apparently we were immigrants too originally and go back further we were immigrants where we came from :scratchhead:

True, but I have never had negative presumptions made about me when I am going about my lawful business in the little group of lands that make up the land of my birth just because of my colourings.

I guess the problem out in the sticks is find me a non White Farmer !!! you will struggle there
its not us being racist as much there just so thin on the ground you poss react diff when you see coloured folks
ive had many a dealing with non white people & found them all no diff to us lot.
They do get tarred with the same stick unfortunately when there call centres from far away lands constantly bombard us with spoof calls tho
hardly doing themselves any favours there. And you wonder why we get our backs up.

I know two very profitable outfits locally where the son has married mixed race girl. So the children not anglo saxon, good to have some diversity. One of the famllies have even become tv stars.

I am a white Welshman who can't speak Welsh and my family is from the Valleys. My family goes back to when we came over with William of Orange, so what am I. I have had many Coloured friends so I am not Racist, but I think this salute the black lives has gone too far.
When I worked for Renwicks a friend told me that he hated the blacks I said you cannot say that and he said why and I said you are has Black as the ace of spades.

Another day I was in London and a couple of us went out for a drink, we went into a pub and the landlord said "are you boys lost this is a black pub and you should not be in here".
So there is Racism on both sides and we should forget about it and just get on with life

The Orange Order is all about when Britain imported a Dutch (hence Orange) Monarch rather than have a Catholic Head of State. Catholics were thought to have more loyalty to Rome than to their Country

Whats funny is you can be an orange man, white and still be a black barsteward......if you know you know.

I see it, jokes about colour , older people very wary of non English to a point they won’t take to them. It is better than it used to be. Yes you see similar in the city but the opening post is about saying the countryside has racism which in my mind it does. Quite how you change it. I do think you can. It’s similar to a pack of dogs, some will get on, some won’t.
saying the countryside has racism, is completely different to saying the countryside IS racist, which is what harrison is saying and is - i think - what most people here quite rightly have an issue with.

Mum used to say that when the first black GIs arrived in town, they were welcomed by everyone as they seemed exotic and were generally charming. As soon as the white Army Air Force crowd arrived, it all changed and the black troops were relegated to Thursday afternoons only due to the segregation in the US Army. It caused a fair bit of resentment among the locals who had made friends with the black engineers.
When I was staying on a farm in Maryland as a student, I was amazed at the overt racism on display. The farmer took me to the Smithsonian air museum for a day out, but when he saw the display about the Tuskegee Airmen, he came out with a barrage of abuse about how you never saw those ****** boys dying for their country when he was in the army. Well no, but that was because they were mostly kept out of the front line due to army policy.

Problem is Christianity has moved on Islam is still in the 7th century.
A lot of Islamics have moved on... many of those that haven't are in situations that have been created by western interference which has allowed the radical mullahs to thrive!
1st of all I don’t care what creed or colour anyone is, but in ALL walks of life if a non white person can’t get what they want they always bring out the race card but if a white person can’t get something then they have to just get on with their lives as they were
No - some may do it, but not all & on the flip side I often hear "white" folk bring out various complaints & excuses. A typical one is the people in poorer areas being denied access to quality education, or there is claiming to be denied access to benefits because "I ain't a black transgendered single lesbian parent with only one leg"!

Without doubt some have moved on but for many Islam is a place in time rather than a religion and what I have seen in places like Manchester has nothing to do with western influences but rather groups of people clinging to an outdated way of life that doesn't empower them but is holding them back. If you compare the attainment levels of Hindus and Moslems from the Indian subcontinent in the UK the Hindus have far outstripped Moslems. Which is why you have island's of disaffected people in places like Bradford and parts of Manchester failure to ascend the social ladder actually drives them deeper into their religion causing much less integration and leading to more racism on all sides,

Remind me Ellie, where were those BNP (or whatever they're called now) councillors being elected backalong?
rural heartlands was it?
Oh, no, it was urban areas with multi-ethnicity

Where did (the odious) tommy Robinson and his EDL start?
Backwoods of Scotland, Cumbria or the Westcountry?
No, urban multi-ethnic Luton

There's one or two people in my wider community of an evidently different ethnicity (one or two dating from straying US GIs in the last war I believe), and beyond a bit of ignorance, I'm pretty sure there's no active racism towards them.
Mind, there's that bloke who claims to be 'The black farmer', when in fact he's actually a very disingenuous fibber. 'The black meat pie salesman' would be an honest title, but that doesn't bother him.

Our local primary skool was marked down by ofstead for NOT having mixed race pupils. honestly.
Local primary out on the moor here was also marked down for exactly the same reasons  you couldn't make it up!

There was an article on Countryfile some years ago about a project to encourage Asian families to visit the countryside, think in one shot they bussed a family out somewhere and told them they could go for a walk or look at the birds, see the cows etc. Think after a few minutes they wanted to get back on the bus and go home.

The big, big problem with the Ellie Harrison article and a number of other stating the same "the countryside is racist" headline is the very broad brush it uses to slur people from rural areas.

A chap moved next door to the farm a few years ago with his family. He's a decorated ex-RAF serviceman, an OBE and possibly the nicest person on the whole street. He's also the only person with brown skin in the whole village. He often walks through the farm on the footpath with his dog and has a chat about the farm, the weather or aeroplanes. If I say to one of the other guys on the farm - "I saw John earlier and he told me...".
"John who?"
"(sighs) Black John...."
"Oh right."

I think it's this subconscious separation that happens when we are confronted with something different. As the only black man for miles he will never be RAF John or big brown dog John, always black John.

But I don't believe this is racism. Nobody in the area has tried to hold John back, segregate him, or oppress him. Nor have they done that to any of the people of Asian, Indian or eastern European descent in the local area. But sadly human nature is to notice differences and John sadly stands out like a Bentley on a council estate and that must be obvious to him and upsetting.

I'm not sure how to change this - better understanding from both sides and open, frank conversations? Who knows. But what definitely won't help are divisive statements in the media accusing one side of something they have no understanding of.
