A smart move (although I'm not sure that it is value for money).
Murdoch realised that if you own the media (newspapers, TV News etc) you control the discourse in your favour. Musk has realised that the discourse is moving to social media.
He just has to figure out how to control the discourse in his favour without it being deemed as breaching freedom of speech.

There will be a lot of people upset at the removal of censorship.
Hopefully he will shift it to an uncensorable decentralised model.
