Emlid Reach RS+

RS2 is ..... just bloody nice! Not cheap, but good kit often isn't. A 50% grant will ease the pain for me!

I full agree that if you are using LoRa then your call may well be the correct one. If you can access a free RTK base as is common on the Continent or another alternative, the NTRIP makes sense and for my low demand need, this is fine. If I was going to be doing a big area or moving around a lot then maybe a LoRa setup, but to be honest based on what I have leaned here, I'd be more likely to setup my my own Base and still use NTRIP if the need was there.

Fieldbee L1 base and rover is a more modest cost setup....?

Paying for an RTK base signal with a big company is horrendous money. There are lower cost options about though.

I don't really need auto steering... at all, just fancy the idea to be honest... I will NOT be paying 5K for one though...

Haha, having the better kit always appeals and seems like it might be better to future-proof the setup but at double the cost gotta ask if it's worth it. Even with the grant money to help.

How did you find/get set up with the NTRIP signal please?

I've been looking at the Fieldbee L1 setup as well. I think the cost of it has come down slightly since I originally looked at it (presumably because they now have the L2). I was originally leaning towards Emlid because I'd heard better things about their receivers for reliability and train up time.

The idea of something that is all designed to work together out of the box has some appeal. I'm a bit of a nerd but not everyone on the farm is so it might lead to less stress in the long run.

Just to jump in on this. Are you guys talking about setting up a lightbar guided system using off the shelf type GPS equipment rather than for example just buying a Trimble/JD Greenstar type system? Does it work out a lot cheaper? I see the Emlid is a receiver, what do you use as a display?

A simple (and cheap) Android tablet, I am using an 8" and will buy a 10" shortly cos of my old and crap eyesight!! 60-70 quid, of if you are young and have good eyesight, use a phone!

Look at the Google Playstore and pop in Field Navigation for starters. Knock spots of a lightbar in my view, others may disagree.

You will have to price the kit you mention, but my undertanding is that it ain't cheap! ;)

Yes, the setup is you buy a GPS/RTK receivers like the Emlid we're discussing then the screen is a tablet which you run a navigation app (eg Fieldbee) on.

Or I will flog you lightly used Garmin Glo receiver, which is a sort of inbetween receiver, much better than your phone, but not as good as a non-corrected receiver and no where near an RTK corrected device :)

The Glo is connected via a Bluetooth using an app to fool teh phones inbuilt GPS. Works a dream, needs a bit of techie thought to setup initially I will admit!

I think your final para has made the decision in a nutshell ;)

Someof us are willing to tinker, albeit in a modest way, others here I am aware will write code and build a complete system, and the majority simply want a plug and play and forget setup. The one BIG box will surely suit your farm's needs better?

Haha, you are helping me to convince myself!

It feels like a bit of a cop out to go for the 'big box' but at the moment given I have another job so won't be on hand to deal with issues if I put together a custom setup think it's probably the right way.

Revisiting this thread.

Can the emlid rs2 used as an RTK base put out trimble corrections yet???

I did not try to check the current status from the link above but previously RS2 did not work "from the box" with Trimble. I don't have any Trimble receivers to test but if you add the RTCM 1008 message with RTKLIB strsvr, it should work. If you cannot find instructions from the emlid support site, AgOpenGPS discussion forum should cover this (even if it is support for Trimble gear, not AOG).

I've asked emlid direct, they were asking which signals I needed, so if I say the above is needed I'll see what they say.

The RTCM 1008 content (antenna type info) can be configured in RTKLIB. Emlid probably know what to use, some claim it should read "NULLANTENNA", some claim others work too (I'm sure it should not refer to any Topcon antenna but no worries there with emlid).

I'm also assuming "Trimble corrections" does not refer to their CMR+ correction signal format. Some GNSS receivers can send CMR+, many don't. My understanding is that all Trimble receivers accept the industry standard RTCM3 correction format that emlid and almost any other product support.

One more detail with older GNSS receivers. Some older product do not support new MSM format messages but need RTCM1004 and RTCM1012 messages (GPS and Glonass). RS2+ does not support these leagcy messages unless that has changed recently. This would only be an issue with old GPS-only or GPS + GLONASS only receivers and I believe many old dual constellation Trimble receivers have been updated to support MSM messages just for compatibility (even if they do not gain from Galileo, Beidou or other new constellations).

Thanks that's a comprehensive response.
I do know my 750 couldn't pick up and use my neighbours signal with its internal radio receiver, it needs an external one for some reason.
His signal works with his case combine.

Hi all,

Dmitriy from Emlid here.

We have recently released a new firmware for Reach receivers that supports RTCM 1008 and other legacy messages. This functionality in beta yet, but you're very welcome to join the testing!
