Employing Ex military

I must have managed well over 20 ex military over the years Without exception, they have no ability to use any initiative all and have to be micro managed.

Having worked in a "military" town with both Army & Navy bases, I must say most employers in the area share my view.

Load of bollo**s. Do you think squaddies are so daft! when taking contact do they look to there command before firing back? No. Do they wait to be told to give first aid to a friend? No. Same applies in civvy street.

I am an ex black watch soldier, 7 years service with a tour of Iraq, Northern Ireland and 2 tours of Afghanistan. I struggled for years to adjust to civvy street and find my feet, had many jobs before stumbling into farming. First job I have felt comfortable in, very similar minded people with hard working ethics. Wouldn’t have any other job now, love it

No self motivation, no independence of mind, people for whom it is the best (i.e. only) career choice

I can only laugh at this! No self motivation? Trying marching with 45 kilo for 20 miles in the darkness of Helmand, then contacting 100 taliban while outnumbered, tired and hungry.

Only career choice? I had many friends who joined as soldiers with good degrees on there backs. They wanted a challenge and to see some excitement before settling down.

Yeah, but an intelligent person would work out how to get a lift. Or even question whether a UK military presence was the answer to the regions' problems!

I think we have a rather weak minded troll here. An intelligent person would realise the reason we used the cover of darkness, was so they were none the wiser to our presence before kicking down doors and doing the business.

Now back to hiding behind your screen in your inherited lifestyle.

What a bunch of macho bulls**t from the military.

I'm so fit, I cam march miles, I can "kick down doors and do the business"

I'll stay off this thread as it's become a battle of wits and I, for one, will not attack the unarmed.

Good idea, after all so far you have proved you have nothing to attack with! Same ignorant tripe every post, just in a different frock.

I had a partner, ex RTR (Chieftain tanks in those days). Fab chap, good brickie & could certainly outwork me. This was just before the first building crash in the mid 90's. We had to go our separate ways in those times but he was a very hard working fellow. I was asked to his wedding in North Wales where the children don't learn the English language until they go to school! I didn't know that until then.

I'm guessing a whole generation of farmers were ex military unless they used the ag exemption and stayed working on the land (which was fair enough.)
Dad certainly used his time while learning how to drop bombs in Canada to good effect, and came home with plenty of ideas for cattle handling and shed building that he had come across on his travels.
I'm lucky enough to be the first in the family for several generations who hasn't served in the military.

Well, when I was flight deck sentry in Aden, I was not allowed to insert the magazine into the rifle without a direct order from the officer of the watch! I would have taken some time, after any such order had been given, there was so much black tape wrapped around the magazine!

The armed forces of today is not the same as even as recent as 30 years ago. Today, it is far smaller & has to be far more dynamic - recent conflicts have taught the need for better problem solving skills and that there is less room for the Mk I cannon fodder types of yesteryear although it does still exist to a smaller extent. Many aspects of military life are regulated & ordered to prevent independence of action - you don't want Private Bloggs deciding to go off & do his own thing in the middle of a war zone as that could imperil not only his own life, but that of his colleagues and the operational plans. This is not the same as being unable to think or act on ones own initiative when the situation requires it.

Tarring all ex-military with the same brush is the same as suggesting that all farmers are tight fisted gits with wearing West Country smocks tied up with a piece of string who spend their days leaning on a fence chewing a bit of straw saying "Ooh Arr" all day, wearing cow crap encrusted wellies & drive Range Rovers....
