As per title is there any way to do this easily and without making a mess.

Will be spreading a good bit of urea this year as opposed to blends, urea has more nitrogen in it so I think this situation will arise.

Would like to be prepared

My way is a bit basic but it works. I cut a little hole in the shape of a cross not too big 2 to 3 inches across so it comes out slowly and I can look at the box in the cab and see when I’ve got enough then u shove a rag in the hole to stop the fert coming out then slide a piece of plastic bag in so it covers and supports the hole never lost a grain yet taking it back to the shed and putting it down but do this 20ft from the stack not miles

That's exactly what I did filling my old wagtail
on my 402 vicon i had yrs ago i took off the the little plastic flippy extension bolted a few bits of angle onto the top ledge of the hopper and to that some timbers on there edge as extension sides, worked a treat.

I use a plastic screw in thingy with a shutter, had it for a many years.
Been meaning to buy one where you drop the bag on a spike
Same here, on both counts.

Never liked getting under a bag to screw it in though.... 🤷‍♂️ The ability to put just a few Kg into the spreader is great, I first used it when spreading early doors with a small Vicon on a LGP spreader, just putting 200kg on at a time on damp fields for early bite.

Did you ever buy the spike version?

It isn't sensible getting under to screw it in, maybe I'll ask for a spike one for Xmas.
Generally I use it when keeping tight following cattle grazing, 6 acres at 50units, its actually a very important bit of kit

Still use it for paddock dressing.

Cut a big V shaped piece out of the side of an old lick bucket. Cut a V in the side of the bag and shove the piece of bucket in when you want to stop the fert.
You'll still need to judge where to cut the bag. It'll stop it dribbling but don't expect it to stop the fert in full flow, if you cut the bag too low down.

Too tight... Will pick one up sometime, but not actually using much bag muck nowadays...

Cheaper version... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175975533329

It takes about 5 minutes if you open the top and just shovel it out with a bucket.
Metal buckets are best as they "dig easier.
Put a bit of tape around the hooks on the handle if they catch on the bag, some do and some don't.
Done probably hundreds of tons this way.
Then close it back up with a zip tie if you are not using the rest for a while. You can use the zip tie you took off if you can figure out how to open it without cutting it.

When 500kg bags came out we were given a Vee shaped piece of wood with a handle to slot in the bag after you cut it to stop the flow, think it was hadfields.
