EN8 or EN24T?

I've got a breaker head for a 30t machine to make, its on 90mm pins. Similar to he attached but the pins won't be welded but on bushes and bolted in.

I'd normally use EN16T but can't source it at the moment and have been offered EN8 and EN24T. In the learned opinion on here, which would be the better one to go for?

Must be a shortage of EN16 I got some 3/4 a couple of weeks ago had another length left on back order expected this week but they phoned this morning to say it could be december, I've always used EN16 for bucket pins too. I might be dreaming this but I think someone once told me need'nt make pins too hard better to wear the pin than wear the hitch. EN8 would be easier drilling and if only bolting in could be replaced at later date if need be.

I'm not a fan of EN8. I find it has a habit of suffering fatigue cracks - especially when welded. Like you my preference would be EN16T, but EN24 will do the job, but will be an absolute pig to drill for cross bolts. Can your supplier get any EN19? It's a bit kinder to work with.

EN24T is through hardened so will be a bitch to drill for you. EN8 is more commonly used for bucket pins as it’ll wear before the bush as posted above. My preference on a 30Ter would be to go for EN8 due to the cost of rebushing a 30T bucket and 24T isnt really made for cross stress more torsional load so you will get cracks and fractures, EN19 I’d be less inclined to use again but each to their own. As for a lack of EN16, there will be at the moment with the loss of Liberty Steels and they produced a good quantity of 16T bright in both round and hex, the European market is slowly catching back up.

After a bit of research I've come to the same conclusion and will plump for the EN8.

And its cheaper!!

Thanks all for the input

EN16T was the same steel used in the Mini Cooper crankshaft… for me that’s a blast from the past!

All this talk of soft pivot pins..? cat pins and bushes are as hard as anything and we have plenty of pivots on 20k hours with no wear at all. Greased of course.. dummy pins, anything seems to work ok if a snug fit to start with.
