My wife and I stopped in Machynlleth one Saturday afternoon recently. It's a lovely small town to look around.

Called in at Lloyd Williams to buy a roasting joint for the following day.

He told me he was closing the shop and his abbatoir. Blamed regulations and over the top officals. I asked where the nearest abbatoir would be after he closed. Shrewsbury probably he said.

He also mentioned farmers who want him to buy off them and then wouldn't come to Machynlleth to do their grocery/meat shopping.

It's sad.

The roast sirloin was excellent. Wish I had bought more.

Years ago I called in the s/h in Blaenau Ffestiniog with a couple of hoggets. As I drove into the yard I pointed out to Dad that there were 4 cars there less than 3 years old. There were also 2 ex gas board vans well over 10 years. Sure enough inside were 4 people in white coats and wellies standing holding clipboards and watching Dafydd and his assistant hard at work. In the 20 minutes I was there I didn't see the white coats do anything, not even a tick on their clipboards.
When I called in Dafydd's shop to collect the carcasses I asked him how much he paid for these leeches attendance. The figure he quoted was shocking. He was particularly unhappy at that moment 'cos he had just received a letter saying he would have to fork out another 110 pounds for a new certificate.
The s/h closed the following year.

But the big slaughterers would be advsing govt to crank it up to drive the small man out.
Same as nfu

An issue of fundamental importance to UK ag.
More so now than ever, due to the need to promote red meat as eco friendly; role in ELMS land management, less miles to slaughter etc.
Can anyone share anything of substance that shows the NFU are currently doing anything to address this issue, or that they have made any attempt to do so in the last 30 years ?

Saw title and thought Centre for Alternative Technology had gone ! Sorry to hear about the abattoir.
ah....'Compost world' as my urchins called it upon visiting.

We went round, listened to all the very earnest hippy stuff.
Then went to eat.
Nothing on the cafe menu could have been prepared from wholly local ingrediants...it was veggie/vegan, and all included stuff from hotter climes.
Standing outside the cafe on exiting, I heard a faint whistle -or maybe saw movement- looked up and saw a fella high on the hill above gathering his flock.
Man, dog, stick, and sheep, gathering (to wean lambs) off unimproved hillside I'd guess.
Timeless, a sight to behold.
Carbon friendly, practically organic, and healthy as trout in the brook.

The good people of Compost World were oblivious to this beautiful scene.....but I wasn't blind to the colossal irony.

Mebe the vegan diet helps the compost toilets work more effectively...?
You are of course right on what you say, but that aside it's an inspirational place that has encouraged countless people over the years to go home and 'do their bit'.

Massive loss for the town of Machynlleth and the local area seeing and end of an era as our famous colourful butcher Will Lloyd Williams will be opening his door tomorrow for the last time . Will, Rich and Rob are a great team and the meat they sell is of the highest quality With out a doubt the best shop in town. We have bought there for many many years and it's been a weekly shop. Not many of these special places left these days.
Diolch yn fawr I Will ar team.
