i know i'll need it.....thing is rpa 'lost' some entitlements during transfer in 2015..so rather than risk a third year i thought i'd try and buy some....but i can really only justify the price quoted

sold a few but have a few left still - pm if interested

don't bother at £75 though - just sold the last lot (yesterday) at £160

they are a long way from worthless when they have 3 more years of claims left in them yet !

we are in same boat as you. Can't justify not buying even if have to lose next year.
Bought some yesterday from near neighbour through an agent in SW for £125.
They had sold some in April for £100. Damn missed out again:banghead:.

I notice in farmers weekly that they refer to vat sales on entitlements, so any price paid will have vat added and would be reclaimable? have i got that right?

Yes.

As a capital investment, they can also be written down as a CGT loss once they are made worthless at the next round of reforms (as SFP entitlements were), which can be banked to use offset (part of) any potential future Capital Gains.

Are you sure about this, I thought they were carried over, and if you were without or short of, you applied to National Reserve?

As agreed with my accountant... SFP entitlements were abolished at the end of the scheme, with new BPS entitlements being granted on however much eligible land you were farming in the first year of that scheme. The old ones finished and new ones were introduced, they are not the same entitlement.
