Just looked up your 'Gentle Farming' website. I see how you're trying to take payments for what is described as regenerative agriculture, but what I don't understand is how you measure the positive outcomes on farm and how you weight payments for these.

I get it that it's very early days for this approach and I guess this is a start down that path of payments for ecosystem services, but how are you describing values for payments and how is this all weighted to the supplier (farmer)? Difficult questions ..... but interesting to discuss?

how does Evian measure their water is “better “ than tap water ?

Farmers always struggle with the concept of marketing !

We did a carbon audit with 1 of these sites a couple of years ago. Found it was easy to look at what we emit, but could only estimate what we would be sequestering without taking base measurements and then follow up annual testing, which of course takes time. We put in a modest increase in carbon as we’re primarily organic permanent pasture and came out with a decent negative figure.
What surprised me recently was that test results on land which has been grass for 15 years came back with only 0.9% carbon. Perhaps we’re not sequestering as much as we think?

it’s not just about sequestration, how much are you storing

Happened upon this post relating to coppiced woodland, maybe not entirely comparable, but does sum the job up, as ever the middle men do the best out of it.

gentle farming passes circa 80% to the farmer - it does need the 20% to operate / cover cost

the bigger question is % of what ? i have seen some stupid low numbers placed in the value of carbon

selling carbon alone will end up a race to the bottom if not careful - i think carbon should only be sold as part of a bigger ecosystem gain picture that obviously includes carbon

gentle farming sells hectares not tonnes

So we're perpetuating the marketing BS based on FA........ business as usual and that's why we're not in a very good place........ and I thought we were finally making progress!

Clive it sounds innovative and not critical of this at all as it's part of the process to nudge society towards 'valuing' not only food but production systems and ecosystem services. We're a developed and 'specialised' society where money is the token of exchange...... it's not a case of I'll give you a hind quarter of pig if you'll come and thatch my barn next week.

So my burning question is how are Gentle Farming actually valuing each hectare and splitting out the different elements of value and exchanging that value for money? I get it that the %'s are weighted in the farmers favour and there's admin on top, but where is the integral value and how are you working it out? There's got to be a logic based and research based valuation hasn't there? Otherwise it's in effect a 'Just Giving' website that a few concerned individuals use to salve their consciances.
