Anybody else had trouble with the new premium blend heating up in the pile ?
we took delivery about a month back and was assured it's just as dry as it used to be when cosi bed dried it for them and that it was circa 92% dry matter . When it was delivered it felt as if there was a bit of damp to it so I put my cheap ebay probe in it which read 22% moisture ! I was concerned but the driver assured me it was fine and so I put it down to my cheap probe so I took delivery but the driver made a note on the ticket that I was concerned . Anyway scc's dropped that first week and so I thought great must be down to the bedding and never gave it another thought , however after that first week scc and mastitis steadly rose and keeps rising to this day despite me having taken no end of cows out of the tank and dried off plenty early who gave high cdt on the robot . Today I have spent 4 hrs cleaning the cubicles convinced that maybe some residue from the old bedding in front of the brisket board may be the cause and having done that went to fill the ag dispenser with some more premium blend, however I noticed it did feel a tad warm in the dispenser and so I went to the pile in the shed and dug in a foot or so to the pile and boy did it feel hot , so stuck my probe in again which I know on temperature is pretty accurate and it's reading 22% -24% moisture and 54 deg c ! This surely has to be the cause of my trouble doesn't it or is it normal for bedding to heat to this level if stored in a pile , is there somewhere I could send a sample to test for bacteria like we do with the milk ?
What's really annoying is I chucked a cheap load of bedding that cost £600 away thinking it was the problem and now looks like I might be stuck with a £1600 load of problems !

Yes got a photo of probe on delivery showing 22% moisture 22 deg c . and then a photo to day showing 24% moisture and 54 deg c. This probe is only a cheapo china job for £25 and thus I doubted the reading on delivery , however there is no mistaking the heat in it now .
I Know enviro sytems no longer get it dried by the old company and so wondered if this is now an issue for anyone else or have I just had a bad load . I'll be on the phone first thing and see what they have to say , hopefully a bad load that they will replace ,there website claims 95% dry matter so something must be a wrong

This is a serious concern and, as Chips says, our managing director Liz visited the farm yesterday to sort the problem quickly.

Since launching Envirobed Premium Blend several months ago, we have had many good comments from customers. In addition to being nicely bulky, lasting well and staying on the beds, one increasingly common observation is many fewer flies around the cows, probably because the material is so dry (95% DM) and slightly alkaline, making it an unviable place for fly eggs to hatch.

Tomorrow (Wed 5 Oct), we're exhibiting at the South West Dairy Show and would love to meet some Farming Forum members who are there.

New stuff rocked up today and seems drier than previous load , hopefully sorted now and it won't heat up this time as I have no wish to change products ,it really is nice stuff to use compared to just about every other product I have used before like gypsum, lime ash ,bulk and bagged sawdust and straw , only thing not tried is sand but I have channels so fingers crossed for premium bed especially as given how long it sticks on the beds and it's bulk it works out as cheap as any of the others .
Many thanks for the quick turn around Sally , happy customer once more (y)

Did you get compensation for mastitis problems and throwing away some of your other bedding?

I didn't throw any envirobed away , they replaced it FOC , the stuff I threw away in the first place was a different product from a different company which was not sold as dry but mixed with buxton lime to prevent bugs
