Saw somewhere on here I think the ergot slides down edges of heap with all the chaff so pick out a representative sample. This is a great excuse for rejections / deductions at intake and samples could vary a lot.

Seems ok at 290g, sure you haven't picked up the FBT tender calculator? What you have written doesn’t make sense. I make it 2.9kg…..
I make that 1kg per ton, or 29kg in 29 tons. Our official limits are 0.001% in feed grain and zero in food grades.
0.001% of an artic load would be 290g.
So how many pieces in a typical sample?

You are correct, I was multiplying 29000 by 0.001 but that's incorrect its 0.001 of 1% so 0.00001 x 29000 kg equals 0.29 kg. Oops!I've just triple checked this;
1% would be 290kg
0.1% = 29kg
0.01% = 2.9kg
0.001% = 0.29kg

I see my error ThanksYou are correct, I was multiplying 29000 by 0.001 but that's incorrect its 0.001 of 1% so 0.00001 x 29000 kg equals .29 kg. Oops!
I spent 20 minutes on the face of the heap this morning pulling it down gently with my hand and found 5 pieces in total. Not a lot for the time spent looking. Got my man from Cefetra coming out in the morning. We will see how much he finds. How much can you find if you just crouch down at the front of the heap? Several pieces without looking too hard? And are you selling as feed which has a tolerance level or are you trying for human consumption which is zero tolerance?
That doesn't sound much. Last year I could find 4 or 5 pieces in less than a minute without moving. I decided to send it for feed instead of the GP3 it had been destined to be (no ergot found in any of the merchants samples) and all 6 loads went with no claim as feed.I spent 20 minutes on the face of the heap this morning pulling it down gently with my hand and found 5 pieces in total. 10 at a guessNever seen ergot before so not up to speed with the merchants.
Just counted out what I thought was ergot from a 1kg sample.
Some may not be ergot but I picked out ergot plus doubtfuls for the picture.
Can anybody tell me from pic attached how many ergot there are there?
I need to know what I'm talking about when the merchant calls again.View attachment 980487
Hmm, maybe 6 diificult to tell, but most looks like manky grain ( no offence ).10 at a guess
Thanks that's confirmed my thoughts.10 at a guess
Bushel weight 75 but few shrivelled grains there too.Hmm, maybe 6 diificult to tell, but most looks like manky grain ( no offence ).
What causes that?
Likely to be a bad year for DON/ZON scores?
A cleaned 1kg sample could maybe get away with a mouse poo sized one.So how many pieces in a typical sample?
