Ergot Claims

Saw somewhere on here I think the ergot slides down edges of heap with all the chaff so pick out a representative sample. This is a great excuse for rejections / deductions at intake and samples could vary a lot.

Yes, it does. If you are filling a store with an auger etc it runs down the edges along with the chaff.

So how many pieces in a typical sample?

We only record the presence or absence of ergot, based on the 5kg intake sample we take.

So far we have found ergot in 20% of all the wheat & barley intake, which is exactly half the level we found last year.

For some context, these 16 pieces weigh 1g

How much can you find if you just crouch down at the front of the heap? Several pieces without looking too hard? And are you selling as feed which has a tolerance level or are you trying for human consumption which is zero tolerance?
I spent 20 minutes on the face of the heap this morning pulling it down gently with my hand and found 5 pieces in total. Not a lot for the time spent looking. Got my man from Cefetra coming out in the morning. We will see how much he finds.

That doesn't sound much. Last year I could find 4 or 5 pieces in less than a minute without moving. I decided to send it for feed instead of the GP3 it had been destined to be (no ergot found in any of the merchants samples) and all 6 loads went with no claim as feed.

Never seen ergot before so not up to speed with the merchants.
Just counted out what I thought was ergot from a 1kg sample.
Some may not be ergot but I picked out ergot plus doubtfuls for the picture.
Can anybody tell me from pic attached how many ergot there are there?
I need to know what I'm talking about when the merchant calls again.

I've had one load in with ergot from a weedy field that had come out of grass. Second one in from a BG free field so will see how that goes. I did segregate my heaps, and I hand rogued the two long term arable ones myself.
