EU- Mercosur Trade Deal.

The potential Eu-Mercosur trade deal has been blocked by Austria. Largely due to concerns about products not being produced to environmental standards around agriculture. I think on the whole a good decision for agriculture in the EU. I personally want to produce products to a high environmental and welfare standard, but wouldn't be able to if undercut by other countries producing products to a lesser standard. My only hope is the UK government don't throw agriculture under the bus to get a post Brexit trade deal with the Mercosur.

On the other hand, a single nation wants special treatment and all the other 27 say No and you say that's undemocratic!

And on here recall threads and posts concerned about the mercosaur deal. Maybe the Amazon being on fire has led to Austrian public opinion saying that beef and soya produced once rain forest is cleared is not sustainable. Maybe a few UK grass fed beef farmers might agree. Your comment seems to suggest trade at all cost. Funny old world following the thoughts of posters on TFF. Hey ho.

Glad its been blocked but look at the money thats been wasted putting the deal together, its been years in the making only to come to nothing. EU is a money blowing organisation who say one thing but do another ie , you must cut emissions but we are going to source beef from countries burning rainforests in return for cars! you couldnt make it up

This is the opposite of what they have done. The EU cancelled the deal because of concerns about environmental problems in the Mercosur region.

This is the main quandary for Europeans. Should the EU be a slow moving behemoth requiring unanimous agreement or should it make quick simple majority decisions and force member nations to accept situations against it's will?

It has always been my belief that Europe would be stronger if member nations were left to make more decisions for themselves in the manner of the original EEC.

The EU is a group of nations. Austria is an equal partner in the EU like every other nation - their vote matters.

The EU top table wanted the deal, whether the European general population wanted the deal is another matter.

I suspect climate change was used as an excuse to kill it without losing face.

As the UK has found out when it comes to Ireland. All the bluster from Priti Patel about starving the Irish into dropping the backstop looked ignorant at the time and very crass now.

Ah so its not sustainable to import beef grazed on the Cerrado but you can flog them emissions dodging Volkswagens?

You checked the carbon footprint of that beef against European stuff then?

When the EEC set out 20 years ago to make the Deal it could not have predicted how rapidly the world's understanding of climate complexity would change, or how the political situation in the Mercosaur nations would revert to instability. I don't think the basis for that deal was especially wrong - but if it is now stopped - it's a relief that it won't go ahead in its present form.
