I always go by every day past the middle of October with more than a few cattle out here is a bonus

Its nearing the end of October now and 80% of our cattle are still out, yes they are getting some fodder but are still on more than half grass, its been some lovely weather the ground is still dry and it looks like they will be ok out till the end of the month at least

how is the autumn going for the rest of you ?
will housing be later than normal ?

All youngstock out, plenty of grass for them along with a bit of cake. Milkers out by day and given the option at night, although 90% if their diet would be out the trough.

Our yearlings, half our spring born calves, and the last 3rd of autumn calvers are inside, everything else still out. Not far off normal. We don't have much grass and cows were scoffing the grass we were zero grazing to them. Now using up the few bales of last years silage that's left before starting this years. Eating a lot of straw too.

Down in central Scotland for a few days at bull sales and I can't believe the grass that's down here.

Why have you housed them? Is it wet with you ?

Mine are still out and will be for the next three weeks. I took advantage of the good weather three weeks ago and licked a bit of N on, that really seems to have done the trick. I have enough grass to keep them till mid December if the ground favours the job for once.
All a plus as the shed for them to go into aint close to being finished yet...

Cold nights, no grass, would be feeding a hell of a lot for maintenance for the yearlings if they were still out.

Last 3rd of autumn calvers are in to calf, if I had a sheltered field to put them out to once calved I would be, especially as ground is still reasonably dry.

We aren't ring fenced and its a case of once things start to turn colder and wetter (which they did at start of october) we have to commit to inside. If I had more shelter belts and sand I'd keep things out a lot longer maybe all year tbh.

Dairy in by night only, everything else out still...more grass here now then we’ve had all summer
Talking to guy near the coast in Dorset a month ago and his high yielders were in as he had been fighting with very limited grass virtually all summer and a abandoned grazing for highs to leave lows and heifers out.
Very long winter tho!!!!

Cows were in for 8 months here last winter so no way mine were staying in this summer,I done first cut and 20 acres second cut then let the cows graze the lot all summer, just lucky last year I was making baled silage for fun which Ive buffered with all summer and still feeding now

The earliest I had all cattle in by 18 October. Everything is still out at the moment but this weekend might change things. One lot is on silage but there’s still grass for them. Minimal plunge yet. That heavy rain 10 days ago turned a nice block of land from a 3/4 week grazing block to a 1 week grazing block but still better than normal
