It’s the larval stage (cyst) of a tapeworm found in foxes dogs etc, humans too but it isn’t good. Years ago the old man made a stainless steel punch for knocking a hole in the sheep’s head to remove it. Whether it was ever used or successful is something I don’t know.

One of those things on the side indoors and people ask what it is for and promptly wish they hadn’t !!

Brilliant! I’ve seen a punch used to, with a hollow pipe against the side of the head you can hear which side it is on and then 2 knocks with the punch. Saved 2 last year that went on to lamb 6 weeks later and reared twins (y)

@Norfolk Hill Farmer Gid will make them lean to the side for a few days, usually the left, if you don’t catch it early there’s not much hope I’m afraid, most people just put them down and others use a punch as it’s got to be worth a try? When they get worse they will either start turning around in circles continuously until they fall over or they’ll just fall over with their head to the side and it’ll appear quite stiff.

Thanks that's very interesting. Get one or two like this every year that I give them everything I've got but to no effect. Does sound like Gid as you described, are you literally listening for the worm to locate it ? Would you be able to describe the precedure in more detail ? I'm thinking of a scene from the film alien.
