Ewe lambed 24hrs ago and now...

....seems to be trying again.

Aye-up,

ewe had twins first thing yesterday, all good, no problem. Scanned for twins.

A bit off her food this morning and also seems as though she’s lambing again. Up and down, pawing the straw, little bleats etc. Not really straining but huffing and puffing.

I didn’t find any afterbirth at any time.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Pete.

if it's internal then pen&strep would have been my choice. Pet lambs are a bind..... my Mrs pet had two X-rays and five visits to the vet over a floppy ear, still alive though, must be ten years at least.
When our kids have kept pet lambs as ewes they've been total disasters. They seem to have no mothering instinct at all. Probably genetic and the reason they were orphans in the first place!

She’s a great mum with gallons of milk, no problem there.

Just had another look, seems to have settled, no more pushing, nibbling at a bit of hay. Hasn’t had a drink all night though.

Just keep an eye on her I suppose. Sent The Lad to find the retainer.

If she hasn’t had a drink, it maybe worth mixing up a bottle of electrolytes, hold her head up and she will drink it as you pour it into her mouth. Once they become dehydrated, that can be more dangerous sometimes.

It doesn’t hurt either way so worth doing. If you don’t have electrolytes you could use some glycol or even glucose in water. Even if you have some lucozade (non fizzy), I’ve used that for dehydrated lambs with rotavirus when I ran out of proper stuff.

I’ve been giving concentrates for the last few years, but last year, after the wet winter and them all looking bloody shockingly poor, I mixed up my own 19% coarse ration. It worked well, turned them around, so I’ve done it again this time. They look well so far. Twins are having about 1 kg per day, singles half that.

She’s had a nibble on that today, eating hay too and has drunk maybe a couple of litres. She gets up and about and let’s her lambs suck so she’s not on deaths door, just a bit lethargic.

I gave her a squirt of Ewe-go earlier and another this evening. Vet said if anything looks a bit TwinLamb to give them some so I thought if I’ve got it she may as well have it.

So she’s had everything, belt and braces!!!
