They know sheep farmers won't squeal like a dairy farmer
i rang MVF and got one price , rang another they own (who i mainly deal with ) and got same ration £50 t cheaper (had a breakdown of ration) , as they only change their prices twice yearly , was told however it would substantially go up in april ,

If you were a dairy farmer they would priced it at £268 and held it until May.

Don’t your merchants up there fix a price for the season? The ones I would consider dealing with all do.

I was quoted £272 today for a ration I paid £265 for last year (almost identical ingredient list), fixed in price and formulation for the season. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the price jump considering.

It always seems to be Nwf. l have gone with Davidsons and that was a question that I asked and was told the price would be fixed until the end of April and that the formulation wouldn’t change unlike Nwf who have a reputation of changing and not for the better

The Davidsons ingredients label posted above looks like some good stuff at the price. I somehow doubt they deliver down here, so didn’t enquire with them.

Does anyone ever feed just Sugar Beet pellets for lambing? Just wondered what they are like for sheep. Seen a few people use it in a mix and some ram breeders using it to what looks look a good success!

I have been starting ewes on sbp in the winter and moving onto a compound nearer lambing. What I have found is although they love the straight sbp and it satisfies them very well, in March you start to see them losing a bit of hair on the bridge of their noses, this hair grows back quite quickly after moving onto the compound, although they never forgive me for the change, they much prefer the sbp.

This year I’m starting them on an 80:20 sbp:18% compound to provide a bit more protein which is what I think is missing early on, and it gets them used to the compound, then nearer lambing I’ll gradually change the ratio to 20:80, hopefully keeping them happier and healthier!

I don’t think ours really notice the difference in what comes out of the snacker. They are that mad for getting at whatever we’ve got it’s all eaten before they start thinking again.

🤔🤔

correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that’s standard pregnant female behaviour. I’ve just asked the wife and she’s made a non commital gesture and said “probably”

I was feeding on the ground before and they would paw an sbp nut out of a muddy hole to get it, whereas if a compound roll had the slightest dirt on it it would be ignored and wasted, I ended up buying enough troughs to feed everything and that sorted the waste problem, and the birds don’t get a look in now 🙌 it’s more work but seeing the feed literally flying away was driving me mad. The ground is just too wet here for a snacker.

When they got a feed of sbp that would be them satisfied for the rest of the day, as soon as I switched to rolls they would be after me whenever I showed up, regardless of how much they had been given.

Use a lot of SBP pellets until mid February. Then swap too ewe nuts for extra protein and minerals.
nothing better than SBP for outside feeding though
That's what I was thinking of doing.
When do you start lambing is it around the beginning of March?
When do you start them on SBP?
How much do you feed?
I usually start on a 50/50 SBP and 18% roll three weeks before lambing for the twins and everything gets SBP when they've lambed to keep their milk going. Do you feed everything SBP uptill mid February? Keen to learn if there is a better system than mine and why.
My ewes are in a much better condition now than they were last year and I have good grass keep uptill lambing. Will bring them back home in the middle of Feb to the shed to start lambing 2nd week of March. Need to keep their condition on without too much cake. Is that why you feed SBP?
Lot of questions but would be grateful if you would share your experience.

I know what you mean. I’ve got some steep banks and dry open woodland so we can get the snacker in. I would feed nothing but SBP for the reasons you mention! But they do need that bit extra as they get too lambing. Usually swap them onto compound over the course of 10 days.

We usually have feed from bibby/ Carr's billington at Newtown and they sell thousands of tons of SBP and whole maize 50:50, then 1/3 each of SBP,maize and 19%cake closer to lambing and up the percentage of cake as and when. The ewes clean it up on the ground really well

Now that is interesting. I use CB ewe nuts anyway. Food for thought indeed!! Thanks!
