Ewe Prolapsing

Hi folks, have a ewe who was pushing out last night and then it went back in for 24 hours, it’s back out again tonight. Should I be worried or any advice?

Dose of anti-inflammatory and spoon tied in for a week ought to sort her out.

Get a harness on her pdq before it gets any worse, jab of metacam and antibiotic and she'll be fine. Don't use a spoon, they are the work of the devil and should be banned.

I think you'll find it's a fork that's the devil uses, you've got the wrong cutlery.

I find they stop straining if the spoon is in along with the harness . Nowt wrong with them !

We don't usually have them thankfully but a stitch is hard to beat for immediate effect.

We always use a prolapse retainer. Available at most agricultural suppliers.

I had a ewe lamb with a smaller prolapse than that, just as she was coming up to lambing. She lambed fine and it settled back in. I recorded it but didn’t mark her as a cull.

Yesterday morning she had the whole lot out. . Now stitched and harnessed until it settles.

I’m firmly in the ‘harness camp’, with the spoons thrown on the fire 20 years ago, before they could irritate even more ewes! Better than nothing in the absence of anything else being available, but I try to keep enough harnesses on standby, just in case.

Harness anything that is more significant than a little protrusion when lying down.

There are times when I might put a 'spoon' in the harness to help keep everything in the right place. I would look to remove the spoon ASAP and continue with just a harness.

never lost a lamb or ewe using a spoon and thats since 80s, totally agree there is nowt wrong with them

Spoons here, they can lamb with them in, which is ideal when lambing outdoors, they then get a cull tag!
