ewes in late gestation aborting

For ongoing protection they need a course of 2 injections to start then an annual booster. The disease is so sporadic it's almost impossible to quantify the benefits of vaccine in a flock. Doing replacement is one option, but you'd need to know who to boost

Regardless of what the data sheet says (annual booster needed), I believe the general practice in NZ is to vaccinate replacements (twice) then give the annual booster the next year, and let natural infection/immunity cover the rest. That's certainly what I intend doing anyway.

We first had a campy outbreak twenty odd years ago. Research at the time said that we would probably get a few rumbling cases each year, with a storm every now and again. Experience has shown that to be the case, with a couple of 'storms' (c.15% aborted) since then. After losing a load of ET lambs last year:cry:, when campy flaired up in the recips, I started vaccinating ewe lamb replacements (& shearlings this year).

I've only lambed the pedigree flock so far this year, but definitely far lower losses and stronger lambs from the ewe lambs & maiden shearlings amongst those this year.(y)
