Ewes with lambs at foot

Any one sold any this year? Price per life ?

In the Scottish Borders, good 4 to 5 crop Texel cross Mules or Suffolk crosses with tight-skinned Texel, Beltex or Suffolk cross lambs are being valued at about £65/life for farm-to-farm sales.

Anything with too much Lleyn or with Charollais cross lambs will be devalued by about £10/life. And for most buyers, the cull value of the ewe is a major consideration, so lean Mules are also discounted.

If Cov19 hadn't happened, we could well be talking about normal market prices of £73.33/life - making ewe with twins worth £220. At that rate, even New Zealanders might concede that it is worth treating every sheep as an individual. But we have a duty to treat all domesticated animals as individuals anyway - we look after them, and in return, they look after us.

And if anyone is selling ewes with lambs at foot privately, they should wait to tag lambs until just before they are loaded, so that they will have sequential numbers. It makes life easier all round. And give the buyer a list of the ewe numbers.
