I’m considering installing a Central Boiler Classic Edge 300 log burning boiler to heat my house. It’s an American product imported by Central Boilers UK. I would like to hear of any experiences of these boilers or this company if anyone has any. Thanks.

I like mine very much. we have one and an eco angus i prefer the central boiler. however if you are doing it for the RHI i would seriously consider chip. Logs are a lot of work and the price of timber is skyrocketing. You need tidy timber to produce logs whereas chip can be produced from all sorts.

I have considered wood chip but logs suit my situation for various reasons. How many years have you had the central boiler and have you had any problems with it?

they appear to do what it says on the tin, one of my customers has one heating five houses and a swimming pool, when we first visited the site I said it was a bit under sized but he says it does the job mostly. I had to rewire it due to a fire but it was not the fault of the boiler that started the fire. the only other thing I had was the thermostatic mixer was not working correctly. they chuck all sorts in to burn.
the UK distributor are a bit lethargic at dealing with parts inquiries. I had to threaten them with reporting them to HQ in the states, it got a result next day.

I had a misweld at the back where the American's can fit a gas igniter (not allowed on RHI here) but was covered under warranty. i believe the newer models (the one they had at the RWAS) has a stainless steel inside and a panel at the back for easier cleaning (very messy to clean). all in all its been very good. Use's around 50 ton a year on the 89kw version.

I don’t know about these but the Ecoangus Boilers can be got from Kotly in Poland for about half the price think that they have paperwork for Rhi now if not pm me and I will look copy paperwork for Rhi accreditation out for the larger boilers 96/130 kWh think I may have 80kwA’s well somewhere

yes I think the polish eco angus is rhi approved,
Eco Angus Boiler is a Orlan caped a Ecoangus Orlan
We have 17 of them 15/130kw a 96 and a 80 the 80 does not draw as well as the 96and 130 s all came from Kotly and are RHI accredited Kotly is a lot cheaper than Ecoangus they areefficient but blunt don’t expect them to run after you I’ve got on great with them though

What kind of logs can you burn in them? Could you chuck oak rings or knotty uneven shape ones that are difficult to split? Will they take two or three foot lengths once going?

Is there a smaller version as I don't want to be burning 50 ton a year.
Just for a single property, unlimited logs mainly softwood.

Have always had wood heating but thinking it might be better having the mess outside in my new house.
One house would put you in domestic Rhi personally I’d not bother with Rhi on this most of the Rhi payments will be taken by registered installers and if you don’t do Rhi you can burn pretty much any wood no worries about fsc registered wood only
Kotly do smaller batch I’d go for 20or 40 kw Boiler 50 cm long logs fit in it

Yes you can burn pretty much anything in them even a dead calf once they are going 1 meter long logs but you want small stuff on bottom building up to large stuff on top

Thanks.
I was just after heating my house rather than any RHI.

the beauty of the central boiler is the size of the door. Its massive i can but huge logs in not a problem. The angus is a different story and is more difficult/fussy when loading. if the timber bridges its an arse in the angus to get it to drop down whereas the central boiler is much easier. The 89kw version is the largest they do so smaller ones would use less logs. log amounts completely depends on your heat demand for that 50 ton a year i heat 2 large houses and a workshop.

Its very good for that. It's designed as an outdoor boiler so no need to install indoors. Probably better if it was installed outside. If you do have it installed indoors i would advise having an exhaust fan you can manually switch on when you go to load (like the my Angus does) other wise you get smoke and on time flames coming out the top of the door. You get backdrafts sometimes which I'm now aware of but took my eyebrows and fringe off the first time! (Angus suffers from this too but very rarely). I wanted one larger chip system originally and I'm dishearten that i was ignored when the decision was made as I'm the one who fills them, clean them and process all the timber.

with log boilers you need it bigger than normal due to the heat output of a log boiler goes up and down a lot with the burn cycle, they do not recommend you let a log boiler slumber, they prefer to batch burn, this keeps the heat exchanger in better condition, log boilers do tent to choke up the heat exchangers a lot more than chip or pellet.
