Experiences of Drilling OSR with Low Disturbance Subsoiler

Just interested to hear how people have got on drilling OSR with Low Disturbance subsoiler and disc coulters on the back.

Preferences of Seeder units and disc coulters plus disc running straight behind leg or slightly offset? Our subsoiler leaves gap behind leg on heavier land so was thinking be better to run coulters off set at either 40 or 50cm spacing. Like the idea of split seeder unit to put starter fert down spout also all in one pass.

Weaving seem to be cheapest coulters on market but do they last?

In the good old days of osr we used to have a shakearator based drill with no shins and v worn points which quite often left a dragged field; just tinkled the seed behind the leg (but behind the packer) and had huge yields. Now with csfb/pigeons/weather I really don’t think it matters a jot how you drill it. If the weather is with you it will grow away from everything that slows it down; if it’s not it won’t.

Very happy with this Great Plains prototype. Quick and conserves moisture. Generally only use one seeder but came with two and offers flexibility. Seeder very easy to calibrate and uses gps speed sensor which works well.

I had not seen or heard of the TWB Alternator before. It looks even more like the spiritual successor to Taskers Tillage Train than all the trio style cultivators.

Those legs look impressively low disturbance, but I guess the discs help a lot.

he called it alternator cause you put in what you want configure wise can run legs up and use discs or lift discs and use legs
pops said one day when he built first terminator as he called it
it did not have a name and they stuck it on a crawler and stick it in and stopped it dead hence name 🤷🏻‍♂️ or so he says
the 12 mm legs work well
have 6 leg mounted

I knew a little about their Terminators, thought they seem to be built to a much more specific configuration. The Alternator in your picture looks to be a much more universal tool carrier design for swapping elements. We still have a Tillage Train here, minus the original cultivator parts and it was last set up as a tine drill. The flaw in the versatile multi tool carrier concept was it is so much easier to just change implements than to change elements in an implement.

Err, this is low disturbance canola planting with no “subsoiler”

single disc into grazed off oats.

went 3t / ha, which is a very good yield here View attachment 1028845View attachment 1028846

I've tried this for a few years here and it just doesn't work well with a single disc. I think a combination of slugs and the barley residue emits toxins which impede germination when wet

You can see in my photo the discs are set quite deep - that is because I was cutting through a mat of oat straw about 40 - 50 mm thick & putting the seed in about 25 - 30 mm into the soil. It was heavy black basalt country & certainly no shortage of moisture. The client was very happy with the emergence
