We upgraded our old 400 P rapid to a much more up to date 6m system disc machine this year ,,,,,, we had several dealers arrive on our doorstep wanting to know if they could quote for the tractor that was obviously going to be needed to pull it as it was thought we were vastly underpowered . ( god knows how some of them even knew we had changed the drill , obviously news travels )
Anyway it seemed we were over 100 hosses short and would need to find another 4 ton to gain enough traction and looking around the area it would seem they were right .
So a few weeks ago we hooked up our old Puma 210 onto the drill , took the front weight off , let the tyres down , put 3 bags of seed in and off we went . She flew , traveling at 14 kph on the flat and being dragged back to 11 / 12 kph going up the banky ground . I was even laughed at when I drew into a notoriously steep bank but still managed quite admirably ,,,,,, yes we have had a dry year and I might be eating some humble pie in a damper year .
But yesterday we started drilling beans ,,,, have to say I was a bit apprehensive as I want them in the ground 3 or 4 inches and knew that this would be a real test , I had no reason to worry ,,,,, 11 kph all day long
So begs the question and I'm sure there are some good reasons , why would you charge around with a 13 odd ton 300 + hp tractor when a 7 ton 200 hoss tractor will do ?????
The drill by the way used to have a well weighted up 380 hoss tractor up front
