Explosion in Beruit

Hope your head is deep enough into the sand to avoid any serious damage; It's this kind of attitude that helps keep the public negative perception of farmers where it currently is; Just take a moment to see how your agri-business would be affected if it had to comply with the whole range of restrictions and regulations every other UK business dealing with ADR class products has to meet- The age-old agricultural exemptions will be under ever greater public and Government scrutiny and I wholly expect many of them to be rescinded and in the very near future.
I very much doubt this tragic accident will affect on farm storage in the uk, as said the ira made a lot of use of AN in the past without calls for extra restrictions, thankfully those times are behind us.
This was a tragic accident, possibly a complete unawares of what they had in store and what it could do but an accident none the less,

what stops an accident (fire) happening on a farm ?

I’ve seen AN stored next to straw and diesel in the past ........ what could possibly go wrong there hey !

Was most of Lebanon wheat storage, which isn't great considering they've got a food shortage. Que civil war. Maybe the rumours of it being an act of terrorism are right....

We shouldn’t be using AN anyway, the absolute bullpoo spread by the likes of CF about urea is criminal.

the NFU are doing their best to get rid of synthetic N with their nett zero promise anyway i guess so apparently it’s days are numbered anyway ....... not sure they fully explained this to their members though :ROFLMAO:

It's often said on here that the rest of the world don't use AN.....so how did 2700t end up there?
The Ammonium nitrate could have been fertiliser or industrial explosive product- there is virtually no difference, and the material used for explosive purposes are widely used in mining and many other legitimate industrial uses.

Why do we use so much AN over here when it’s so bad for the soil and with the associated storage risks?

HSE stipulate over here that every farm storing over 25t of AN must notify the fire brigade, so anyone that has even a s8ngle arctic load delivered should do so. Has anybody else tried?

When I had a visit coming I went through the process so that I could tick another box for him. I made a string of phone calls, before I finally got through to someone, at Powys County level, to be able to notify. Even she had never heard of the requirement before, there was no process in place to be able to do so, and no way for them to record it. We laughed at the absurdity of it, then decided that, as I’d told her, I had indeed notified the fire brigade.
I always notify our local fire brigade
We have one in our village and a number of the firemen are friends
They came out and had a look
No problem
Red Tractor.... Tick ✔️

? The use of AN by the IRA directly caused it's availability and use to be completely banned in NI - the ban still exists there today. Given the various technologies now readily exists to enable Urea to provide similar high efficiencies of N, either AN as fertiliser will become prohibited by law or far more highly regulated, bringing Farmers into line with every other industry using ADR class products.

that’s a big grain silo ? couple hundred thousand tonnes maybe ?

120,000 tonnes, but quite empty at the moment, apparently around 15,000 tonnes held, as the country is going through a financial crisis. Expect there to be many more casualties in the coming months if they can't get food to the population.
