Extase potential problems

We are being told frost damage, but no other wheats suffered and the extase and all our wheats had a very robust 4 stage fungicide program. I suspect eyespot but have been told things unfortunately I can't repeat.

Eyespot probably....
Eyespot doesn't typically cause entire fields in apparently robust health, root and branch, suddenly to lose all useful leaf in a big wet spell at the beginning of July.

What we had here big time this time has always been called, by plant pathologists and agronomists alike, septoria when affecting other varieties, but not yet in the special case of Extase, apparently.

We had graham and extase in the same field side by side on nice soil. Both looked well, extase had lodged slightly more. Combine yield meter registering slightly higher yield in the extase, bw 77-79kg/hl. Can't say on actual yields as no weighbridge. Lovely sample with bold grain.
Edit. forgot to say it was first wheat after w.osr

Drilled extase after potatoes, 3 days prior to the weather breaking in October 2020. 3” of rain that weekend, another 30 odd inch by time it eventually stopped. Coming into spring there was a discussion about taking it out as looked terrible, low plant count and washouts. Plus the local swans seemed to like it.

left it in, minimum spend on it, did 3.2t/ac and stayed clean. Better payer than SB at sub 2t/ac would’ve been. Had another field sown 2 days prior of elation, it did 2.6t with higher spend.

it seems to fit the difficult late sown slot here so far (2nd year growing)…… and our ag group advice is don’t sow in an early/mid slot, issues with sterility seen in early sown 2019 crops.

Interesting to note that Scottish growers were advised in Autumn 2020 to take care with variety Extase due to potential issue with ear sterility if grown in northern Scotland. Any Scottish folk with any comment?
Crunching the numbers off the weighbridge for this harvest:
Over the previous 5 years 2nd wheats have averaged a very consistent 3.6t/acre, but this year Extase managed 4.36t/ acre, adjusted to 15%.It’s probably the year as much as the variety, as Scotland had a decent summer, and about 20 frosts in April.

Thank you for your reply. That is a very good performance. Think you had a fair run of sun during grain fill. My wife stayed near Loch Earn for about three weeks end of July / early August and said the sun shone practically every day all day.

Any more ideas on what went wrong with yours? You asked a question about herbicides earlier is that a potential cause?

It's a shame there is no definitive answer as of yet from KwS, as it ticks so many boxes and would helave been good to get off the fungicide spend band wagon

Hi, no further forward with anything conclusive, as far as I am aware. A few folk have visited for a look. Farmers and agronomists, some of whom have had thoughts and ideas.

Hey ho. Think it will still be a popular variety this Autumn.
