Extase potential problems

Quite a discussion on the NIAB Tag members virtual call on Extase this morning. In summary it’s a good variety but , unlike me 🤦, spread your risk and don’t plant all Extase for ‘22
The great and good of the NIAB still not quite up to addressing the 30-40% yield reduction small handful, apparently.

As to Extase, my final comment is this - what steps, if any, have KWS yet taken to protect next year's yields by weeding out any of their seed stocks currently contaminated with this year's s. nodorum?

This corroborates a conversation that I had with our Agronomist yesterday, sadly.
Said no rush to get Extase seed bought, there looks like plenty that will be coming unexpectedly available before October.
Anyone else finding another KWS white elephant, Firefly, to be fairly shite?

We grew firefly last year looked great but specific weights in the mid 60s dropped the yield to just above 3t for a crop that looked easily 4

But disappointing for the club members nonetheless.
And I am about to plant a ton of Astronomer:banghead:.
Though to have a Cougar for a granny might be amusing and not entirely a bad thing.....

For us Firefly did very well this year, only a small area in a field with skyscraper around it. I remember saying to the combine driver whilst putting the header on "we want a bit of seed from here but Don't know if we'll grow it on as the headlands look loads better", well! I have never seen the flashing light come on as quick even the Mrs commented about it. When we finished the driver said the yield didnt drop below 5t acre and was well over 6 in places.

got the seed dressed a week or 2 ago and the cleaner said its probably the best sample he's done this year . maybe he says that to all the farmers

Firefly, just like Extase, seems to do extremely well, compared to standard varieties, for some, and appallingly badly for others.

No doubt KWS already have the answer to this, whether it's down to local foliar disease at grain-fill, or disease contained within individual seed stocks, but may not wish to publicize it.

Perhaps we shall just have to accept that KWS varieties have become the absolute marmite of WW.
