Extase potential problems

I have heard from my agronomist today that someone not far from me PE9 postcode, has been harvesting extase with a yield of about 2 t/ha. Apparently KwS are looking into this. Has anyone else had any problems.?

Your man is correct. And the yield figure is correct.

I am aware of three separate farms with disastrous Extase. One in PE10, one in PE12, and the other not sure but in Northants. The case in PE12 also has severe Ergot. Crops have just not set grain, many infertile sites and the grains are like mouse droppings.

Having seen what I have there is something odd about Extase. I gather now after some research there have been issues with infertility recorded in trial sites in the north of the UK.

We have a Moulin here (!) .

Friend of mine has the same problem. Tiny ears and not looking good. Interestingly, a small triangle that has not been sprayed looks great.
I have some on a contract farm where we shut the gate after T1. I have not looked at it recently but I don't recall anything unusual.

Interesting, I went and rubbed out some ears in one of my fields of Extase and have to say that I was disappointed at the sample; pinged and unfilled grain. Not a patch on the Graham I rubbed out on the same day but that was on a different farm.

I fear we may be the same with one field.Coming up from the River there are a number of dark erect heads, with shrivelled grain, and as you travel further away from the River it improves. We think it is frost damage as the area affected is where the frost is usually worse and being the variety is early the crop was susceptible to the April frosts.

Same here. Dark, blackened erect heads - tiny as well. Patchy in field. I am suspecting frost damage. The PE12 is next to the sea wall. The other two are inland. started to see mid July. Not good.

This corroborates a conversation that I had with our Agronomist yesterday, sadly.
Said no rush to get Extase seed bought, there looks like plenty that will be coming unexpectedly available before October.
Anyone else finding another KWS white elephant, Firefly, to be fairly shite?

Don’t say that my firefly looks really good.

Cut some Extase last week, looked great all year after Beans and hasn’t dissapointed. Best ever yield on the farm helped by a bushel weight of 79.5 which was better than the Gleam adjoining it. Also cheaper to grow as no T0 required. Fantastic variety.

Have heard a report of a similar situation locally of the variety not setting grain properly with very low yields (we are in PE12 so could be the same one someone else mentioned earlier). We were going to try some this Autumn but think we may well give it another year now. It's probably a very small risk but a risk none the less.

My understanding is that Extase isn't very tolerant of late frosts and frosts in May can lead to aborted grain sites. Basically don't drill it too early and not at all in areas prone to late frosts. This is different to Moulin which suffered from poor pollination, particularly if it is wet at flowering. I have 55ha of Extase in the ground so will know the score in the next week or so weather allowing; nonetheless I am reluctant to grow it again however it yields. It seems a shame a variety that is about reducing disease risk introduces a risk we have even less control over.
