Extending a Powerguard warranty

Can it be done? Of course I will ask my dealer, but I thought I'd seek experiences in here too.

JD 6215R Autopower approaching 5 years old with Powerguard for 5 years from new. It does grain hauling during harvest, some ploughing or power harrowing then pulls a sprayer from most of the spring. Roughly 1,000 hours/year. It has been reliable so far.

Do I;
  1. Trade it in for a new one as I can't really have it breaking down. It's replacement will be sought with a longer Powerguard period from new.
  2. Extend Powerguard to cover the bills and get some good will out of JD if it has a major breakdown that takes it into the workshop for weeks during a busy period e.g. a loan machine.
  3. Keep it for a few more years and hope that I get the sweet spot of the cost of ownership where depreciation is lower but the repair costs don't go too high, say keep it until 7,500 hours?
  4. Sell it and get a 12 month hire to minimise risk, at a price? At my last job I hired the sprayer tractor for a 5 year period & 6,000 hours. £28k/year but supplied with a high spec, Greenstar & a set of rowcrops. The principle downside is no residual asset value, so effectively around £50k extra minus servicing costs, interest, tyres and the safety of no major downtime.

£28,000/year is expensive for 1000 hours. What size was it?
Quoted recently £15,000 for 200hp Puma for 1000 hours including full warranty and service.

It sounds like a Fendt would suit you as they do long term warranties as well as contract hire or guaranteed buyback.

It was also a 6215R. Not a cheap deal but the cheapest I could find at the time and there wasn’t the ability to buy even on hp at the time (long story!)

Warranty is purely a risk management tool, at a price. No, it won’t stop it breaking down. We’ve never lost money on Powerguard yet. Nor Maxicare on Claas combines.

I’ve just extended the warranty on another brand of green tractor. It’s a tractor that I’ve recently bought second hand with 3200hrs coming to the end of its 5 year 4000hr extended warranty. I’ve extended for an extra two years (it’ll be 7 then) and up to 5000hrs for £5k.

Does power guard stop it from breaking down? Why don’t you just bank the money you would spend on warranty and if it breaks pay for the repairs?
The chances are that anything that was going to break after 5 years has broken and the rest is wear and tear breakages anyway.
Totaly agree, whats this obsession with having warranty, it,s not like its free.

Buying extra warranty is like a insurance policy in my view. You hope you'll never need it, but your glad you have it when you do.

Saying that our main tractor is out of warranty. I priced extending it but was told by new Holland dealer any warranty has to be bought when new. Luckily got other tractor that could fill its boots if need be.

PowerGuard on tractors is up to 8 years or 8000h. If I remember right (but it’s been a while!) you can amend the plan as long as it hasn’t expired.

I would keep the extended powerguard warranty money and use it to pay any repair bill.If the need arises you may have to hire a tractor to keep the wheels turning whilst repairs are done. If you get on well with the local dealer he may assist with this. The dealer would probably go for no 1 on your list as that is the most beneficial to his business.

I don’t think you can extend the powerguard warranty as such, but you can go onto the JD greenshield warranty with machines up to 7 years old. Not quite sure how it differs.
Fendt warranties run rings around the JD offerings in terms of cost, flexibility and what is included.

Have a discussion with your dealer. Deere used values are very high at the moment, you may be pleasently surprised at what the cost to change comes back like for a new one.

JD would be the only one I wouldn't bother about warranty with. Just put your money in the bank just in case you need it we took out extended warranty with one and never needed it so the last tractor was bought without and it had an issue which JD helped with anyway.

Next tractor is not JD and has warranty till 5000 hrs but if it had been green we wouldn't have bothered. Also the 200 quid excess or whatever they call it is pretty steep you'd end up piling up jobs to save money

Have you bought a Fastrac!?

Never realised JD have a excess too. Thought it was a new Holland thing.
